My sister called, she lives in Chicago, Illinois and is now forced to move due to the extremely high taxes on their property and sales taxes. She is retired and on a fixed income but due to the upcoming tax increases she has no alternative but to relocate. Any suggestions as to where is the best progressive place for a retired fixed income person to move to? She says every time she turns around a new tax is implemented, now there is one on beverages, she is extremely frustrated at this.
She is very progressive but does not have internet access due to costs, so I told her I would try to get some input from others.
Any ideas?

(615 posts)Not sure about the fixed income questions, but it is similar to chicago in a lot of way. Of course different from as well in lots of ways.

(1,301 posts)Check out Florida. Even places like Pasco County where you can be close to a lot of things but the sprawl hasn't quite reached them yet. Still, prices have gone up dramatically in the last couple of years.

(7,580 posts)I live in the mountains in New Mexico...I also live on a fixed income. I have a large home I would like to share. Your sister would have her own private room and private bath. I am asking for $600/moth rent but I would be happy to have your sister with me if she would just share the utility bils with me...electricity, TV, Internet, propane costs in the winter, and the trash. She would have full run of the house.
I am a retired school teacher and I live a quiet life with my puppy....a 4# Chihuahua.

(7,580 posts)we have two GREAT Senators here. We also have mild winters and lots of areas to visit around here including our world famous hot-air ballon festival in October. There is a grocery store near me that has the best deli I have ever experienced.

(12,344 posts)It's a progressive island in a sea of red. No state income tax. Lower cost of living than Chicago when I lived there, but it's been rising in recent years, so she might do better in the suburbs. Nice winters, but hot as hell in the summer.

(9,709 posts)my friends are quite liberal, (you need to pick and choose like anything else). Rent is very senior reasonable, I'm on the intracoastal waterway in the heart of downtown, a trolley is available to take me to the store or where ever I want to go. A mile from the airport, a few blocks from the train (Amtrack also) and buses run regularly. I've been here for 15 years and love it. PM me if you need any info.

(12,667 posts)Does she like a strong neighborhood type community, or is she into gardening, or is she basically a city girl at heart?
Moving somewhere, especially if it's the "where do I want to live the rest of my life" decision is difficult.
My parents decided on Albuquerque when it came time for both to retire, because living in Seattle was just becoming too expensive in the early 2000's.
But there were several things that made Albuquerque more attractive than, say, Silver Springs Colorado or somewhere in Western Washington or around Eugene, Oregon - not the least of which was the relatively mild weather...
Albuquerque is a large city with a lot of options available and plenty of things to do. There were also a lot of retirees there due to the weather; so a lot of facilitation for the needs of the elderly are available.
Dad was a military retiree, and there were several safe neighborhoods with houses with large enough lots for gardening around the major Air Force base there - even though they were close to one of the rougher parts of town (the "Little Vietnam" area). Add in lot of natural scenery, history, and archeology within driving distance (as both my parents were/are into history and sight-seeing), and a low cost of living, Albuquerque appears to have been a good fit - for the time being. As Mom is getting towards her eighth decade and has become more housebound, though - it's not so good (public transportation in her area is a nightmare). Laz and I are hoping to get the 200 sq. ft of our California room fixed up by the time she's going to have to decide if she wants to go into a nursing home or get some living assistance because she'll needs help - we prefer her to move in with us in our ADA-compliant double-wide here in SoCal than to be stuck on her own without the ability to care for herself. Even though there are facilities to care for her either at home or in a facility with a home setting there; it's just a matter of personal peace of mind on our end.
My point is that there are progressive pockets pretty much everywhere - even in red states - but most of them require living in a city, which tends to be more expensive than living in a rural area when you're on a fixed income. And not all of them are elderly-friendly - especially if there's not a good tax base to support infrastructure and assistance programs.
Because she's retired and on a fixed income, she really needs to visit someplace before the decision to move is made. And she has to think about what sort of life she would be comfortable living in, and how she might be able to transition from being able to care for herself to requiring long-term care.

(291 posts)She loves to cross country ski so I will recommend Minnesota for sure, especially with the awesome Al Franken as a Senator.
You are all great, thanks!!!!!

(291 posts)She said the beverage tax is the last straw, the crime is also a problem so she is now made up her mind to sell and move. The property values have also decreased dramatically so she is fed up with Illinois where she has lived for 62 years. Thanks for your help tho, you are awesome for sharing that info.

(33,604 posts)The only thing I would advise is going to a State with a good safety net.
Unfortunately, most of those have higher taxes.
