If Trump, in an interview, explicitly stated that he's part of the Neo Nazi movement that rioted in VA this weekend? If he said he thinks the pure White Race is superior to all others and that the other races need to move aside? How many votes would he lose?
Let's face it, Trump is in fact a White Supremacist, everything he says and does supports that fact. How many of his voters would leave him if he went public with that? I think not more than 50% would abandon him. He'd still be capable of getting 30-40 million votes in the general election. Maybe more.

(6,082 posts)...to not have known by Election Day. Let's face it: a lot more people voted for Trump because of his beliefs rather than in spite of them.

(19,095 posts)Yeah, he's obviously a White Supremacist, and much of his base voted for him because of it, but in this day and age, being a closeted White Supremacist is different than being an open one. The entire Conservative movement in this country is built on pretending their racist ideas and policies aren't racist. These people actually believe their ideas aren't racist.

(56,828 posts)Let's say that Trump was outed as a white supremacist a week before the election and he embraced the label...or at least did not deny it was true.
The rural white rednecks already turned out in droves for him in 2016, especially compared to 2012 and 2008. No change there.
However, I'm guessing a good percentage of those more moderate Republicans that held their noses and voted Trump in hopes of changing the SCotUS and/or that he would pivot and be more presidential would NOT have voted for him if he was openly racist. Maybe they stay home or maybe they vote Johnson? Maybe a few even vote for Clinton instead? Even if 10% of Trump voters voted for Johnson, stayed home or voted Clinton, it would have resulted in a landslide win for her (and likely control of the Senate with pickups in PA, WI and MO?) - not just Michigan, PA and WI, but FL and NC as well.
Additionally, I'm guessing a few minority voters that did vote Trump would have switched to Clinton, and it also would have helped increase minority turnout as well.

(30,676 posts)the technical detail of the electoral college is irrelevant in this hypothetical case.
But since relatively few people vote it's hard to say how many of the Nazis there are. I'm convinced we far outnumber them, but their power is disproportionate to the numbers.
If everybody voted or face a fine, like in Australia (talk about difficult places to get to the voting booth!) We would have better representation. We might not like it though. Australia elects conservative blowhards a lot. It's who they are. BTW, women were allowed to vote in AU in 1902.

(19,095 posts)They made Hillary into the boogie man out of thin air. They convinced armed citizens to drive across the country to a pizza parlor. Their propaganda is so strong I think it doesn't matter, the Pee Pee Tape could come out and show Trump with two small children and the Right would still say he's better than the alternative.
