Make no mistake about it, Charlottesville did not happen in a vacuum.
When certain personality types fear, they tend to embrace authoritarianism/fascism.
Removed from the divisive, deceptive, and ideological fear and anger inducing language, Americans by a strong majority support socialistic and liberal principles (multiple studies in political science have demonstrated this).
Members of our corrupt corporate controlled political system long ago realized that they only way to get and keep power to impose their greedy and exploitative agenda on people who would mostly never support was by lying to and manipulating especially those personality types who lean towards authoritarianism when they fear.
The corporate controlled media and the 24 hour news cycle, with their "if it bleeds it leads" sensationalization of violence and stoking of American's fears planted the seeds. Right wing hate radio watered and fertilized those seeds.
Charlottesville was not a mistake. It was not spontaneous. It was exactly what all the dark money wants - keep the serfs occupied hating and killing each other so wannabe aristocrats who are already ridiculously rich can get richer.
We need to repeal the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and end corporate media.
On edit: To clarify, when I say fear, I do not mean a fear of being exposed as racist. That, as a response below points out, is no longer true and, in fact, they are emboldened. When I say fear I mean fear of terrorism, of the other, of them losing their jobs and homes. Conservatives, in general, are motivated and driven by fear. When the media preys on and stokes those fears, they move further towards authoritarianism. But so do the middle of the road people who are not as fundamentally already driven by fear.
It is also a divide and conquer tactic - but that tactic is "fear the person who is more your peer but looks a little different instead of me who looks like you but is not your peer due to the gross inequalities between us"

Yes, I agree that they are emboldened but the fascist-in-chief - but the push for fascism in the face of perceived threats came long before the most recent election.
Going to add this to the OP for clarity.
