I was in the Army during the first Gulf War and they started playing that after Taps. At first none of knew what we were supposed to do. Attention? Parade rest? The NCOs finally said we should just wait.

This went on for months. Finally the groans and the snickering worked. I asked one day "Do we really have to stand here and listen to this crap?" It's such a corny song let alone the blind oblivion and subservience- and yes I was IN the Army. The Sgt.s said we could fall out.

We were the first in line for chow. First to head downtown. Etc.

I HATE that song.

24. I have a story about that song

I was on a search and rescue team that went to 9/11.

At one of the meal gatherings, they had some celebrities come through on a USO style tour. Lee Greenwood was one of them and he was asked to get up on a chair in the middle of the room and sing it.

It was actually a little moving considering the context

Then again, I might have been in a slightly elevated mental state. I had just spent a few minutes talking to my childhood crush Olivia newton John.

Also met Al Franken that way which is also a good story.
