That law actually prevents Washington State Emergency Management from planning for a nuclear strike.
Lawmakers passed it as a symbolic end to the cold war with the Soviet Union.
In the 1950s and 60s during the Cold War, Washington state had a clear plan and places to shelter -- even bunkers built inside Seattle bridges -- in case of nuclear disaster.
But currently, with North Korea's escalating threats with nukes, few people know state law prevents planning for nuclear disaster.

RCW 38.52.030, passed in 1983, says "The comprehensive, all-hazard emergency plan authorized under this subsection may not include preparation for emergency evacuation or relocation of residents in anticipation of nuclear attack.

(60,010 posts)7. I don't consider the height of the cold War.
I consider MCCarthy-ism and Cuba Missile Crisis and Berlin Wall as the height.

(27,827 posts)3. Yeah, the 11:00 news (Seattle) opened with a long piece on preparing for a nuclear attack.
And they finished it up with that little nugget. Well, it made a change from the usual search and rescue attempts that make up our news (and the layer of smoke from the BC fires that's been suffocating us).
