CNBC Host Joe Kernen: Paul Krugman Owes Us An Apology

Joe Kernen used to be one of my favorite people on CNBC (like 15 years ago) because he was an internet-stock skeptic and his wry under-stated manner was refreshing, but over the years he revealed himself to be a seriously embittered wing-nut... like, not just a Republican but a real crack-pot nut-right loon.

"Wow. I just did Squawk Box — allegedly about my book, but we never got there," Krugman, the New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize-winning Princeton economics professor, wrote on his NYT blog after appearing on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Wednesday morning. "Instead it was one zombie idea after another — Europe is collapsing because of big government, health care is terribly rationed in France, we can save lots of money by denying Medicare to billionaires, on and on." He added: "People getting their news from sources like that are probably getting terrible advice about any kind of investment that depends on macroeconomics."

CNBC Host Joe Kernen: Paul Krugman Owes Us An Apology

"When someone disparages an entire network because he's asked to defend his views I think the network deserves an apology," Kernen, a host of the CNBC show "Squawk Box," wrote in an e-mail to The Huffington Post on Thursday.

Krugman, the Nobel Prize-winning Princeton economist, wrote on his New York Times blog on Wednesday morning after being interviewed by "Squawk Box" that the interview "was one zombie idea after another" and that "people getting their news from sources like that are probably getting terrible advice about any kind of investment that depends on macroeconomics."

Throughout the CNBC interview, Kernen tried to goad Krugman into naming a level of government spending that would be too high. Kernen also told Krugman that he views him "almost like a unicorn, almost, that you really exist in real life."

It took him about all of a day after the meltdown to start pissing on the government.

I remember watching a Jon Stewart parody of CNBC coverage of the banks that brought the nation to the brink in 2008. Every story was a gushy rah-rah for the banks.

But think ... the people on CNBC (hello, Maria Bartiromo!) have benefited personally in BIG ways from their connections to Wall St. insiders.
