Just for the record...

If enough of the Philadelphia area vote is suppressed that Romney carries Pennsylvania then Romney's the next president.

He can campaign in an orange jump-suit with leg shackles while putting out lit cigarettes on a puppy, but if he carries PA he wins.

There are a few moral crimes I honestly cannot imagine, and disenfranchisement as an electoral tactic is among them.

And the singular great moral failing of the media is their failure on that point. The idea of black people voting was the one national moral position of the last half-century that was universal in informed opinion. A universal and central national moral value.

It was so universal and unquestioned and central that even southern politicians did not argue (in public) reasons why black people should not be able to vote because the national mind-set would not tolerate any such nonsense. People have offered reasons why social security is bad, or the civil rights acts were bad, or medicare was bad, but nobody ever had the nerve to say that the ideal of Americans voting in elections was bad because that position was simply not tolerated.

It was, one would have thought, the one thing in the world that wasn't reducible to "partisan squabbling with some good points on both sides of the argument."

But today it is just another "some say" deal.
