Banking laws and making change

Last Tuesday I was at the bank and deposited the receipts from work and then asked for 2-$10's and 4-$5's in exchange for 2-$20's. I was asked for my ID to make change.

I asked the bank manager about this today and she said homeland security and money laundering laws forced them to do it. I replied but I have 4 accounts here not including the work account. And I have been coming here for 5 years and you all know me here. They said it was the law, so I said so if I come in here and give you a $100 bill that I got from you and ask for change you are going to ID me. The manager said yes.

Does anyone know anything about this ridiculousness?

I guess it's not that big of a deal to people but I don't want to ask for change anymore, it makes me feel like I've done something wrong.
