It's a simple way of placing people and themselves into groups on any given issue although an individuals stand on the issue may actually not quite fit into any of the simplified groups.
On the issue of guns for instance, I'm fine with law abiding and trained people owning guns for self protection, collecting, target shooting and/or hunting. I myself have a revolver which I enjoy shooting and took an NRA class recently so I could get my CPL which I got last month. Here on DU I've been called a gun nut.
I also think that semi-automatics ought to be heavily regulated. Such as the magazines for semi-automatic long guns be of the internal type and be restricted to a capacity of 5 rounds and the magazines for handguns can be removable but be limited to a capacity of 7 rounds. I wouldn't care if semi-automatics were banned all together. There are other restrictions I believe ought to be put in place but I won't get into them here for the sake of brevity. Here on DU I've been called a gun grabber.
What am I? Am I a gun grabber or a gun nut?
Years ago before I had even heard of DU, I was a member of the WaPo political forum and I got into a discussion with a woman who said she was strongly pro-choice. I asked her to clarify her stance and she said that a women should be able to get an abortion during the 1st trimester if she so chose to have one for whatever reason. But she also said that during the 2nd and 3rd trimester, abortions ought to be limited to instances of when continuing the pregnancy would place the mother's life at risk or if the baby was severely deformed.
Is this woman strongly pro-choice as she said she was?

(111,305 posts)unless there are serious medical issues with either the mother or the fetus. That's part of trusting the medical profession to do what's right for their patients.
Since she didn't call for a ban on them, she doesn't have to turn in her prochoice card.
As for the guns, you and I are on the same page there, only I'd never own one.

(111,305 posts)That's the difference, right there.
"Pro lifers" have no personal boundaries, nor do they respect them in others. They lie a lot, too.

(36,318 posts)She didn't think abortions should be allowed being with the 2nd trimester unless the mother's life was at risk or if the fetus was severely deformed.
I can't say that I'm using her exact words as this discussion took place many years ago but I believe I got the gist of it.

(4,516 posts)I never understand why, in the arguments about guns, when a gun owner says he/she is a Dem it supposed "disarm" the opponent.
The other day while I was walking down town and a guy goes by with a large gun on his belt. I didn't go over and ask what party he belonged to. I thought he is not normal, to be kind.
The city is celebrating this weekend starting yesterday. The are lots of families and kids and tourists walking up and down the streets and in their midst is this guy looking very out of place, maybe even scaring some people.
