I enjoyed getting out of the hustle and bustsle of Montego Bay and Rios but if you live among the cows and tumbleweeds in a land locked state those beaches are a powerful allure.

I've always thought Kingston was similar to Johannesburg in that it has an unfair reputation for not having much to see in a country where there's a lot of tourism. In South Africa everyone wants to go to Cape Town or on safari or to Durban and the beach.

But I found Johannesburg to be a lot of fun and interesting culturally. I have a feeling Kingston would be much the same way. I'd also like to see some of the other southern coastal areas of Jamaica.

Anyway, here's to travel and to the broadening of perspectives.

It is not yet 10 and it is already 95 but that's actually not to bad for this time of year. However, the current humidity is 40 which is about as high as it gets here so that's going to make today's forecasted 105 worse than when the humidity is 5!

There have been times in late Aug, early Sept where the overnight lows have stayed above 100. I think the highest official temp I've seen since living here was 121 or 123.

I actually like the heat so I don't mind. I prefer 115 in the summer to negative temps in the winter.

and it's not part of the monsoons. We haven't had any real monsoon flow this year. It's the worst year I can remember.

There should be another storm coming through next weekend, also not part of the monsoons. However, with the days shorter, we won't get the killing heat we got back in June.

On Bass Strait.

Actually, it never freezes here, today is about 14c. Usually winter is straight off the antarctic. This year's been a bit different, something is going on with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current - the only current to completely encircle the globe.

It's been tracking much, much closer to the Antarctic this year; well below the roaring 40s. Hence our winter has been a lot warmer and dryer than normal.

I know you're a keen weather watcher.

A pretty good time of the year. On 7 August we are at the exact mid-point between solstice and equinox. It might seem freaky, but I can pick up the slight change in the winds. The edge seems to go off them.

In Aboriginal calendars, this 'cross-quarter day' is the start of Early Spring. Funny how the ancients just knew this instinctively. I'm having a Saturday morning joint and anticipating some warmth.

Bull Bay is closest but lots of current there - lovely swim but when the old men tell you not to go out in the deep on any give day, you listen. Hellshire (in St Catherine) used to be lovely but the beach has eroded big time (Frightening).

Evening now and the nearly full moon floats into the sky, cool wind. Cicadas make a loud rattling sound on their way to bed. I heard the first autumn crickets last night. I'm in Japan. Ghost stories are popular during summer because they scare a chill into you, so the husband and I are mindlessly watching teevee shows about ghosts.

It's always good for a laugh when we tell people we don't have air conditioning. Electric fans and cold towels only. The response is disbelief and shock, as if we said we didn't eat or sleep. The worst of summer heat is only a few months and it's not that hot and we're not elderly or in poor health. I refuse to be weak and give in. I like sweating, it makes me feel like I'm working hard even when I'm just sitting doing nothing.
