What is amazing to me is that German people are so in tune with American politics that they actually choose to illustrate our issues as Mardi Gras floats. And the spectators get it, they know what it's about because they all pay attention to current events.

However this would never happen here in the US, would it? If somebody made a float about Angela Merkel, would Americans even know who that is? Probably not. How many Americans can even name the Prime Ministers/leaders of the European countries, or identify them in a photo. Very few.

Reich-Wingers know Merkel because they hate her. They were told that she brought (probably) 100s of millions of Islamists to Europe, and that's why every European citizen hates Merkel, but somehow we can't get rid of her. You know, we can no longer walk on the street without being slaughtered, they rape our women and daughters, and that's exactly what Merkel wants.

Of course, this is 100% BS. Merkel is actually conservative and tends to be anti-immigration. And while we do have quite a few refugees in Germany, it's not really much of an issue as far as I can tell. The one guy from Syria I met on a train seemed very nice and happy to be here, though communication was difficult since he didn't speak a lot of German / English yet. Using google translate and gestures and our phones he demonstrated how much he loves Merkel, shared stories about his experience in Europe, and when it was time to say goodbye he called me "brother" and we almost appeared to be best friends..

Bazinga or Big Brother, or Foxnoise, and stuffing their faces with French fried pizza

They don't back their cult leader, screaming to lock up their candidates, build egregious
follies, or shoot protestors

They actually seem to be aware of the existence of a world beyond their sofas

There is a famous float designer noted for his savage political humor. His name is Jaques Tilly, which sounds French, but he is from Düsseldorf. Napoleon called Düsseldorf "my little Paris on the Rhein," and some Frenchmen stayed on. We know several locals with French-sounding names.

We see this kind of satirical float in Düsseldorf and Köln (Cologne) every year on "Rose Monday (Rosenmontag)," and this year, they had a particularly rich vein of material to mine.

Always gets to the heart of the matter and then shows no mercy. The Rheinländer love it, of course!

Probably German language only, but his work is pretty well archived. Like I said, no one is shown much mercy, but most of his barbs are well-deserved. The good get off lightly, but the bad and the evil get rightfully skewered.
