Just An Observation

While Trump has been railing about “leaks” from day one in office, the Republicans, on the whole, have made little outcry about them – and what little outcry there was in the beginning is now limited to the occasional comment from GOP spokes-mouths in the media saying tsk, tsk, this shouldn’t be happening. But their supposed outrage is half-hearted at best.

I attribute this to two major factors. One, the “leaks” have invariably led to facts – incontrovertible facts – and therefore cannot be dismissed as “fake news” that has been propagated in order to make Trump look guilty of colluding with the Russians, obstruction of justice, or any other crimes against the American people. The leaks have exposed truths that otherwise would not have come to light – and it has been Trump’s own convoluted explanations for those truths that continue to dig the hole he, and his associates, are already in.

Secondly, I believe that at this point, the powers-that-be in the Republican party have realized that their “pResident” actually IS guilty, and are now welcoming the “leaks” that are making that clear to the populace. It means they don’t have to impeach or force a resignation – they can simply sit back, let events unfold as they undoubtedly will, and distance themselves from having had a hand in ridding the country of a Republican “pResident” they know to be an incompetent, ignorant, mentally-unhinged idiot. They can cast themselves as innocent bystanders who were willing to defend Trump, but whose faith in him was ultimately proven to be misplaced by a disclosure of the facts by others.

While I still believe that Republican voters are ill-informed, easily-led dumb-asses, the PTB in the GOP hierarchy are seasoned, politically-savvy operatives who are able to read the writing on the wall. They know their “pResident” is going down, and that the evidence against him is now overwhelming. Trump, along with his family and associates, have been caught in too many provable lies, too many contradictions, too many “revisions” of their own stories – revisions that were only made after facts surfaced that disproved their initial version of events.

The Republican party now has only one viable exit strategy: to allow the “leakers” to do their work for them. That’s why their “outrage” about leakers is, for all intents and purposes, pretty much non-existent. Their only hope of saving face is to take the position that they didn’t know how deeply involved Trump and his minions were with Russian operatives – until, lo and behold, those pesky leakers proved them wrong.

There simply is nowhere else for the GOP to go, but to feign shock and dismay that the man they elected and supported is not who they allegedly “thought he was”.

The “leakers” are true patriots. They are the people who, regardless of political affiliation, have recognized that Donald Trump is a madman who needs to be removed from office, and they have no qualms about allowing the evidence thereof to be exposed. The GOP’s only hope of getting rid of Trump - who is damaging their “brand” by being identified as one of their own – is to let the leakers take him down, while claiming they had no hand in his downfall.

some of the repubs I think are indeed complicit as well - Ryan, Turtle, perhaps others - so even within their ranks, there are likely hopes that the herd gets thinned - some of the leaders get taken out.

I actually don't want to give them credit for actually caring about any of us - it could just be serendipity that they end up doing some of the right things for the wrong reason - worrying about their own asses.

Good post!

Pence, Ryan and McConnell. If it takes 6 to 12 months and he gets those three it'll be worth the wait. I think it'll be easier to nail his family but there may be over 40 arrests in the end (like with Watergate).

... are indeed complicit. I think that's why they aren't advocating going after the leakers - because the less publicity the leaks get, the better for them.

And yes, they are looking after their own asses. They're not concerned with the country - they're concerned with the damage to their "brand". They are no doubt looking at how low Trump's approval rating is just six months in, and realizing just how bad things could be by the November 2018 midterms.

You can ALWAYS count on one thing: the Republicans will cover their own asses. What Trump doesn't "get" is that tarnishing the GOP "brand" - by acting like a lying lunatic while calling his party members lazy do-nothings and publicly humiliating one of their icons (Sessions) - he has become the enemy.

They left it to the last minute this time. The GOP has gone right up to the line. But now is the time for all good Republicans to come to the aid of their party - and if that means cutting bait and running from this "pResident", they won't hesitate to do so if it means survival of the party.

I hadn't noticed, but you are hearing less from Republican congressmen about the crime being the leakers and not the crimes being leaked.

There are people out there being fed small tidbits of information (by patriotic leakers) that on the surface look like conspiracy theories but that have just enough truth in the tidbit so that word gets around social media. At least, that is what I have heard.
