That is what President Trump means. It's a dump because the family living space was lived in by Black people.
Let me tell you a little story. The first house my wife and I bought was in a section of NYC that was slowly turning into a gentrified neighborhood. We bought our home from a very nice couple with three kids who were moving to the Midwest because he got a job editing a major paper out there. We made a lot of New Yorker jokes, and moved in and began to paint. And paint, and paint.
My now deceased mother-in-law visits. She stays for three weeks and about midway, at dinner, she announces:
"You never told me they were Black!" I assumed she was having a stroke and went for the phone.
"The family was Black! Did you have the place cleaned before you moved in? They have hairs that go everywhere!"
I and my wife sat at the table, stunned. Then she told the kids to go upstairs and watch tv.
"They smell!"
My wife told her to shut up, but I really could not say anything. I should have. I did discuss it with my kids after she left but I know I didn't do the right thing at the time.
My mother in law told the entire family we lived "in a slum." In a house "that Black people moved out of." The other racists in the family knew what she meant. Another family member told me to make sure to change the toilet seats.
That's what a racist like Donald Trump means when he talks about the White House being a "dump." Fuck anyone who voted for him, and anyone who helped.

AC was a sad place in itself. Deteriorating neighborhoods within 3 blocks of the casino district.

Do you honestly think it's more reasonable to conclude that he called The White House "a dump" because of the Obama family having lived there? That seems like a pretty ridiculous stretch, regardless of how racist he might be.

(10,497 posts)What words of caution would they have said? If they said never get a black woman's hair wet it would have been great advice, but somehow I get the feeling that like most racists, they do not have a clue about black people and that is the problem. Being separated from each other by neighborhoods, schools etc., encourages racism. When two races get to live and intermingle what they will learn is that they are not so different after all. Aside form some physical and cultural differences, we all want the same things, have the same feelings.
It is like Mitt Romney not knowing about poor and middle class people. He goes to a McDonalds trying to look like an average American and then comments on how neat the little cardboard box is that his hamburger came in, turning it over in his hands fascinated. He totally defeated his purpose because he demonstrated that he did not have a clue how regular Americans live. How could someone like that be able to understand us and lead us? It is the same with racists, they spread BS among themselves about what minorities are like but have no real concept of it.

CakeGrrl
(10,611 posts)is that his second wife isn't really a 'person' to them - at some level, it's ingrained in the minds of racists that black people are inferior, lesser, don't quite count as real people.
That makes sense based on the OP's example - was the house sterilized against - let's be real - 'n*gger germs'? That's the underlying attitude there. No appeal to the logic of the reality of caucasian germs and diseases - and the same need to disinfect any house occupied by ANY human - will work. The racist programming is deep.

(5,106 posts)shows how little we've progressed since the "one drop of black blood" days. Obama is black, even though his mother was white and he was raised by grandparents. Terms like "mulatto" have a negative, old-fashioned connotation now, and we really have no accepted term for "mixed racial," more awkward to use than black or white. Therefore, Obama is black, period.

My take was that he thinks he is far above the social, economical and historical status of a public "house" that so many others "had" to live in - and not stamp their name across in guilded letters. I'm sure it pains him to pass through the portals of someplace so tacky.
Accordingly, I hope the American people are very soon able to throw him out of their beloved and cherished "dump" and into a nicely padded, tacky gold-plated cell, with his own name plate and number above the lock- which is far more than he deserves.

To my distress, I later figured out that we'd bought the ONLY black-owned home anywhere around. I actually felt bad about that. In fairness, the family was moving to another city because of a job change, but I was not crazy about having turned the neighborhood lily-white. For years I never saw anyone of color at the grocery store or the local shopping mall, but fortunately that changed over the years.

According to the Steele Dossier, he paid 2 women to piss on the bed that the Obama's slept in while he watched.
Despite how intentionally weak and easy to deny anti-discrimination laws are, he was found guilty twice.
He got his political foothold fronting the birther movement.
He has been consistent in his support for white supremacist policies and people.
But several posters on DU immediately jump to defend his remarks as not racist. Of course they do.
They do that because calling anything racist on DU or any where else has to be shut down.
Not even blatantly racist statements on twitter out in the open for all to see can be labeled as racist.
Ya see in the opinion of the majority of white Americans the only racial problem in America is that "Some People" keep accusing others of being racist. That is the issue that gravels their ass. Not the ACTUAL PROVEN RACISM of the person accused - nope the accusation is the issue.
It's just the current generation of "those people should know their place and shut up."

(9,350 posts)I think Trump was actually trying to promote his wealth. He was trying to say that he is so wealthy that and has such nice homes that the White House is a dump to him. Can you imagine how wealthy someone would have to be in order to view the White House as a dump?
Throughout his adult life, Trump has been trying to convince people he is extremely wealthy. Either right before he was elected, or shortly after, Trump was making suggestions that he might keep his personal plane because he viewed it has far better than Air Force One. Many people knew that in truth Trump's plane was no match for Air Force one; however, some in the media indulged Trump and questioned whether Trump's private plane was better than Air Force One. There was actually a news segment, on CBS This Morning, that started by questioning whether Trump would be taking a step down by giving up his plane in order to ride on Air Force One. During the segment it was reported that Air Force One was bigger, could carry more people, and was more technologically advanced than Trump's private plane.
I think the dump comment was another attempt by Trump to promote the idea that he is very wealthy. I think he was also trying pretend that his is making a major sacrifice by being President. He is trying to claim that he gave up a massive salary and multiple palatial mansions all for the good of the American people.

(19,204 posts)not enough gold covering everything there. Trump's place in NYC looks like a poor man's vision of what a rich man's house should look like. Gold covering everything, over-sized ostentatious chandeliers, nothing even remotely tasteful. It's a monument to conspicuous consumption. It's exactly how poor white trash would decorate if they won the lottery. That's where Trump's tastes lie, and that's why the White House doesn't live up to his "standards" (as if Trump has standards about ANYTHING!).
