I am using quotes because I didnt say this, a friend did. I did not know this or remember it, but it is the perfect example of how the American two party system works and how to use it to your benefit and control.
I could list Bob Casey on the issues, but I shouldn't have to, as this person said, they are as liberal as can be but on abortion, which meant the choice was him or Santorum.
period - in the REAL world that was the choice

Casey was a co-sponsor of and voted for the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
Casey is a co-sponsor of S. 1584 (Employment Non-Discrimination Act).[43]
Casey has been a longtime supporter of civil unions and as of April 2013, he announced his support of same-sex marriage.[44][45]
Casey on several occasions supported same sex partners adopting children,[46][47] and specifically expressed his opposition to legislation that would prohibit adoption by same-sex couples.[48]

(9,273 posts)He supports Planned Parenthood because they *prevent abortions*. He is personally opposed to abortion due to his Catholic faith, but AFAIK he has never sponsored or voted for any legislation that would outlaw the procedure. If we get pro-life Dems like him and Joe Biden and Tim Kaine, I'd happily support them. (His father, the late Gov. Casey, was another story.)

(31,121 posts)As I am not posting this to get into an argument with one of those folks who have an agenda that is very obvious to me, I am doing it to appeal to well meaning liberals who can be swayed.

The truth is that Casey, Jr. has a NARAL voting record of 65 percent but considers himself pro-life. We stated that if a Democrat voted with the National Rifle Association two out of every three times, no one in his right mind would call that person an advocate of gun control. So why is Casey, Jr. considered pro-life? The Pennsylvania senator can mouth the virtues of pro-life all he wants, but at the end of the day what really matters is his voting record.

He's taking a lot of flack for disappointing the anti-choice nutters who thought he'd push through their legislation, so he's not a good example of an anti-choice Democrat

Abstaining on voting here could help put someone like Trump lover, Lou Barletta in the Senate. No, thanks.

(18,402 posts)Some time ago, the town in which I lived got redistricted on the state level, and my half of our uber-liberal town was slated to get a new state rep. from a neighboring Democratic, but far more conservative, town. The "Progressive Democrats" group on which I served was stymied as whether to endorse this guy for re-election or simply withhold any endorsement. They were leaning toward not endorsing.
I told them that we shouldn't just sit as judge and jury before talking to him, but rather get smart and use our leverage to get him to accede to our positions (he was running a tight race against a Republican). He was going to need the votes of this new bloc of constituents if he wanted to get elected. So we invited him to an interview. One of our big questions was about his personal views on abortion. He was a devout Catholic (as were most of his old remaining constituents), and personally opposed. He got the message, and stated unequivocally that he would never vote for any bill that would take away a woman's right to choose. He also committed to support marriage equality, which existed nowhere in the nation at that time but was a contentious issue in the Statehouse, which was about to pass a constitutional amendment against it. After our endorsement, he held true and worked hard to oppose the amendment, which would have banned marriage equality. Our state became the first in the nation to permit gay marriage.
I moved after that, but I see he is still the state representative after all these years, and doing a pretty good job of it, I believe. You have to remember that politicians will vote the way their constituents want them to, especially if they need your votes to win. But you have to be proactive: organize, and make your endorsement or votes contingent on promises to respect your positions. It works.
Many excellent senators come to mind who were personally opposed to abortion but always voted to preserve a woman's right to choose.

(15,290 posts)They don't believe in abortion or the death penalty. Gov Casey essentially put executions on hold during his 8 years in office. They are "pro-life" from conception to death. They don't just stop caring after a new life enters the world.
Sen Casey is not his dad. He's a lot more liberal.

(9,670 posts)Basically, a challenge to the purists to see if a "tainted" Democrat who fails the pro-choice litmus test is a better candidate than the whackjob Republican that ran against him. Of course he is, but that's not the point. Good post.

(31,121 posts)Jim Jefferies , who I love to watch and enjoy, on his show last night (Comedy Central) didnt get it either and that saddened me.
But I can promise you if I could explain it to him in detail he would.
My hope is people who read this will stop and think for a minute, even if they dont admit to us here that this makes sense, they might still follow the idea and act on it.
We really dont survive, literally, otherwise.
