The formula is getting real old: Trump pops off. Base loves it. Reasonable citizens are appalled. Base makes fun of reasonable human beings. Reasonable human beings far outnumber nincompoop base. Someone other than Trump says, "It was just a joke! Lighten up."

I think most of us know a joke when we hear it. We also know when a craven little man is throwing red meat to his rabid base, and pandering to his audience for an applause line.
