If they choose a plane headed to the US it's like they hit both places.

Terrorism is first and foremost about the psychological impact you have on the masses. The actual victims who are harmed and are secondary are just a means to that end and a side bonus for them.

If they ever move to more "mundane" targets like rail it will be bad to say the least. A couple months ago I went to NYC via Newark and as I was taking the train into the city it struck me how open a target it was. No security at all, dozen of people just in the one car. One suicide bomb would be havoc. A pair of them, one front and one rear, with some flammable liquid in their packs enough to start a good fire too would trap everyone in the tunnel....

Terrorists have targeted trains in other countries so that was always in the back of my mind whenever I travelled by rail. Not something I thought about often but like you said, you look around and it comes to mind.
