The eight highest-paid police officers all took home more than $230,000, while their boss, Commissioner Edward F. Davis, made $177,549.85, and his boss, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, earned $175,000. The top-paid police officer was Lieutenant Haseeb Hosein, whose 2011 paychecks totaled $259,914, which included $39,028 in overtime and $88,405 in police detail work.

Is there some reason to think he didn't work those hours? If so, I missed that in the article.

Overtime is paid by the employing town or county, road details are paid by whatever town the detail is in ( not always the same)

I'm saving my anger for the politicians and big corporations who are truly robbing us blind while contributing little or nothing to society.

Median salary: 55, 387 - about 26 dollars per hour.

16 hours a week overtime at time and a half (39 ph) : 32,448 - Median rate, not including holiday or Sundays.

16 hours a week detail at the minimum pay (36.30) : 30, 201

If you are looking at someone on the higher side of the pay scale (such as the officer listed in the article) the numbers could definitely go there.

Fri Jul 13, 2012, 07:05 PM
Jul 2012

The one in the article is a lieutenant. Not only would his pay be higher but if he has college degrees that would also put his salary higher.

His salary is 104,339: 50.16 cents an hour
Quinn pay ( education bonus): $14,615
Overtime: 39,028 at time and a half that would be 10 hours a week
Other: 13,582
Details: 88,405 @46 per hour - 36 paid hours per week average

Officers are allowed to work up to 90 hours per week.

Fri Jul 13, 2012, 07:17 PM
Jul 2012

And to think you think someone can work 90 hours a week all year and be effective. That is beyond ridiculous. The police chief should be fired for either fraud or mismanagement. There is mismanagement if he is having officers work 90 hours a week for 52 weeks -- not even any vacation time! And you defend that. Classic.

Also details are paid by a block of hours, not necessarily the hours worked. The minimum is 4 hours paid.

Yes, I defend public employees who work long hours at a difficult and dangerous job. I save my venom for the 1% who love nothing more then seeing people get angry at union jobs with good pay and benefits.

Across the country who knows. I was responding to the OP who claimed it was not possible. Eight over 230K How many over 200K? Over 150K? You may think financial mismanagement and fraud is no big thing. It leads to cuts in services elsewhere but you don't care about that. Are you one of those engaging in this financial mismanagement? It sounds like it.

Not surprising. The CEO of the police department is the police chief. He is limited. To far less than 200K and above. The CEO of Boston is the Mayor. He is also limited to far less than these officers. Would 2 million a year for every public employee be ok as a limit? Or never any limit of any sort?

Should federal employees be limited by President Obama's salary. Or are there employees who deserve more than Obama?

1) I think CEOs, athletes and entertainers are all over paid. I would have no problem with limits on all of them. I think the president is very underpaid. I don't like that they go around making speeches for groups for huge amounts after they leave office. I think they should be paid in the area of five million a year for life with no other compensation allowed.

I would have no problem with a $5,000,000 a year limit on CEOs, entertainers and athletes.

Now I answered your question but I doubt you will answer any of mine.

Doing ANYTHING 60-80 hours a week, particularly police work, does not equate with EASILY.

Just saying.

Both the COP and the MARINE, deserve high compensation.

Do you know who does not ... the corporate CEO. The corporate CEO has his lunch in a very expensive and exclusive restaurant. He counts the lunch as part of his business day.

The COP eats his lunch in a squad car, and the marine often eats his lunch from a plastic pouch. Both of them could get killed during lunch. Not so much an issue for that CEO.

But hey, let's nickle and dime the COP and the Marine. GOP seems to be ok with that.
