But I love seeing the #posts after poster's name, especially when I am on a jury. I also love welcoming newcomers. But if #posts doesn't show up, how does one know?
And why does this feature appear and disappear seemingly randomly?
Enquiring minds want to know.
I want to see this all the time on every post in every thread.

I'm still trying to decide if it's worth it. There are a few mysteries over here that I'm going to suss out before deciding...
This is the most unfriendly to liberals independent Democratic site I've found. OTOH, allowing republican-lite to dominate does make it interesting...

(45,851 posts)I had lurked for years here before I signed up to post, it was amazing to watch the swing to the right even as Obama was being inaugurated.

I am "genetically" Democrat Have loved politics all of my life, read and researched information
that interested me for many years..so when I saw the "new" format/forum thought I might could
navigate it fairly well and posted.
I subscribe to a lot of publications online so that has kept me informed
and updated...but...that pales in comparison to DU's 24/7 updates..literally
by the minute and with thought provoking discussion..
Everyone has been so nice to help with technical questions also!
I have learned so much and this directs me to find more information on various topics..
Thank you for your kind welcome.I especially appreciate all the members who work to make this site
so informative automatically with excellent instructions.

(288 posts)Hi my name is A.J. I am an 18 year old from Louisiana who is preparing for my Freshman year at community college. I joined Democratic Underground less than two or three months ago. I found DU by typing "Democrats" into google and this is one of the results that I got. I would describe myself as a Partisan, someone who only votes for Democrats. I believe strongly in party unity especially between progressives and moderates because united we stand, divided we fall. I really like DU because I feel like I am around like minded people who are, for the most part, nice. If there are any other questions, I will be happy to answer them.

(367 posts)4 years ago i was not informed about the differences between progresses and liberals compared to the rest of the democratic party. i did not know what a blue dog was or that all media is 97% owned and runned conservatively. i do know since 1970 i hated the conservative mindset but lack the proof. my whole family is republican, i mean everyone and me out of 100, the only that does not vote republican. it is hard sometimes to keep mouth shut about oppression, but outnumbered and would be a pointless exercise in futility i did. i will say that this site and a couple of others have educated me about politics. i am now a little better off than i was thanks to reading here the last few years. thanks again DU for being one oasis in the political desert.

(3,065 posts)I saw this website mentioned on another blog. When DU was sued by my local noise paper (The Las Vegas Review-Journal), I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I started reading the postings and got hooked. Not just by the politics but many of the other groups as well. The threads are lively discussions and debates on the events of the day and I especially noticed a certain decorum among the posters here that kept it from turning into an online food fight. Many of the posters are well versed on a variety of subjects and have helped me organize my thoughts during discussions with friends and family. I look forward to expressing my own thoughts here and participating in the threads. I still have some things to learn about posting here, so please be patient with me.

Callmecrazy
(3,065 posts)As it should. For better or worse, this is a progressive website and change is normal. We are willing to try new things and see how they work before we just say no. I gotta say though that I think the jury system is dumb. Censorship on an opinion website contradicts it whole purpose. Call me crazy but most people know when they are being fed bullshit when someone calls it tapioca.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)if you just joined?
I think the jury system sucks. I want the mods back. I don't agree with not censoring and not tossing those who wander in here merely to wreak havoc and denigrate the value system we all supposedly support.
Some people get extremely personal in their attacks and vindictive behaviour. Before it wasn't allowed to stand. Now, it seems to be a freaking free-for-all so you can insult and denigrate anyone at will. Sad, that.

DrewFlorida
(1,096 posts)Hello DU,
I am a registered independent from South Florida, with a background in economics, I consider myself a compassionate progressive, I support all things Occupy, and believe that capitalism without strong regulation and a strong social responsibility is wrong. I support single payer health care and am disappointed we didn't pass it when we held Congress, I believe the constitution directs the government to pursue policy which safeguards the welfare of it's citizens (including protecting them from large corporations and religious zealots). I dislike with passion, hypocritical religious extremists who don't follow the faith which they profess to be committed to, white supremacists, large corporations which value $$$$ more than the communities and people, and people who have the combine traits of ignorance, arrogance, hatefulness (Sarah Palin comes to mind).
I work in the art/framing industry and cater to the 1% of the 1%, most of them I find to be egotistic small minded asses, although there are a few decent human beings among them.
I am a devoted supporter of Barrack Obama, ever since reading "The Audacity of Hope" during the early democratic primary campaign in 2007, I remember my adult son asking if I really thought Obama had a chance to win, I told him "If you build it they will come" a line from my favorite movie "Field of Dreams". After 8 long dreadful years of Bush I am absolutely happy and relieved to have an intelligent compassionate person as my President, and I will be doing everything I can within my power to see that he is reelected.
DU has been a wealth of information for me in my efforts to fight the dearth of false information being put in front of the public, many of whom do not have the time or willingness to research the truth of various issues in the news, they simply believe whichever side seems like it makes sense to them. Unfortunately many of the false stories the extreme righties put out there seem to make sense to the uneducated masses, (example cutting government expenditures during tight financial times seems logical, although it is exactly the opposite of what a government needs to do to pull out of recession).
This is why I have joined DU, to help get information out to those who need it.
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Andrew

(12,132 posts)I'm in Central Florida and have been here just under a year - I feel like a newbie still and probably will for a while. I joined for much the same reasons as you - I needed info I wasn't getting elsewhere and was being drowned by tea-party voices of my co-workers and some friends and even family.
I like to think I've gotten some to rethink but I doubt I've done anywhere near enough.
DrewFlorida
(1,096 posts)Thank you, OriginalGeek
I have resigned myself to rebuking all of the stories my friends family and workmates post on facebook which are false.
So when someone posts that they are sick of not being able to have the "Pledge of Allegiance" said in public schools because of all the unpatriotic liberals, I set the record straight that the pledge of allegiance has a reference to God and therefore subverts the Constitution which they pretend to support. I have seen that when lies are repeated enough, people start to believe them as the truth, even some relatively intelligent people who have never bothered to think them through.
I don't think I can convert any of the dumb and dumber righties, but I can educate the younger people who have yet to have all of the lies sink in yet.
Keep up the good work!
Andrew

(1,076 posts)since 2008 but was a major lurker and never seemed to find the time to devote to the forum. I was always too busy with work and other issues. DU is a great place though and it's hard to stay away. It has the largest group of Democrats and free thinkers on the internet. The diversity represented here is unbelievable. There are so many smart and funny people here it's really uplifting.
I have learned so much from this place I can't begin to tell you. It is just nice to hang out with like minded people and as I become more familiar with the posters here the place feels almost like family and it's hard to stay away.
I have recently become disabled and my life has changed dramatically. I now have a lot of time to come to DU and read and post, it has really been a life saver for me so far. It's the first place I go in the morning and the last place I go at night. I hope to be here for a long time and enjoy all the great things DU has to offer....you people are the best, Thanks for being here.

(11,833 posts)I'm pretty deliberate in making decisions. The first board where I posted fell apart over a long period of time. I was new to posting & had some not so great experiences. Once bitten, twice shy. I determined if I were to post at a board again, I'd need to look myself in the mirror so to speak, to make posting a happy experience. Basically, take personal responsibility so that DU adds to, rather than subtracts from, life away from a computer.
So, I bookmarked this site and read it for a few years. As time went on, decided to jump in the ocean. There were a few posters whose posts I really enjoyed. I'd explored the site pretty well before joining. I love the 'Good Reads' section and the Lounge. Some welcomed me and that made me feel more comfortable.
The key thing at first, in deciding to join, was knowing the rules here were stringent enough that I wouldn't feel bullied or picked on, and that it was safe from intrusion into personal life - i.e., that phishing for personal information and / or stalking or any of those really creepy things - would not be tolerated. I think what convinced me that this is a pretty safe place to post (presuming I had now learned self control and not to reveal too much personal info and not to take things too personally and all that stuff) is the sheer number of people posting. That allowed me to feel comfortable that even the inevitably disagreeable posters wouldn't bother me too much. Someone here gave good advice after I joined, maybe in a welcome thread or something like that, saying wade in slowly to get the hang of it. That helped too.
Thanks to the way I approached stuff here, and the volume of cool smart compassionate people who post good posts, I've become a better progressive (in real ways away from the computer) & a better listener in real life. Plus, I love laughing more, both reading & posting here, and in real life.
That's my rambling reply. Thanks for asking.

(4,835 posts)I was looking for a new place to hang out while I watch my severely autistic, non-verbal, self injurious 17 year old daughter.
I spent quite a lot of time over at the Rush vs Reality when it was on MSN and moved to Yoku with the group. Unfortunately, the format is not mobile device friendly, and I am transitioning to almost exclusively mobile (while I watch my daughter).
So here I am. I like it here (despite having a post hidden for being ironic), and the occasional extremely over the top responses that I occasionally get from old hands:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=940644
Plus the occasional accusation that I am from the RNC, or Freeperville, when I disagree with a campaign strategy.
I like to think that I'm a reasonable democrat, and I appreciate the conversation, because it beats just sitting around watching Disney cartoons with my daughter.
Thanks.

(2,424 posts)That is why I originally came here. Before 2008, a disinterested, apathetic voter. After 2008, a firebrand preacher for the progressive agenda. A man scared to death of the Tea Party vision.
DU makes me feel like I am not alone. From what television provides, a person like me could really feel alone. DU gives me relief in knowing I am not some exotic, isolated radical.
I was a political junkie when I was young, but lost all faith in politics for a couple decades or so. It is only genuine fear that got me back in to the game. I'll bet there are more like me than you might suspect.

(27,630 posts)HI CONCERN TROLL! Just kidding, of course!!
I am likewise concerned at the slim possibility (but yet a frightening possibility nonetheless) of Romney actually being president. But there is a chance. I couldn't believe it when Bush became president the first time, and again in disbelief when he narrowly won a 2nd time.
I also enjoy DU for the same reasons as you. Mostly I just wanted to call someone a "concern troll" as a joke.
soccer1
(343 posts)The reelection of GW Bush woke me up to the fact that anything can happen in an election. And of course Gore's loss with the SC involvement stunned me. It's hard to imagine Obama won't win but in difficult economic times most incumbents don't win. So, yes I'm very concerned.

(27,630 posts)Happy to introduce you to the subject.
You used the word concern in a perfectly reasonable way.
Regarding "concern trolls", which you are not...
On political boards such as DU, it is a common tactic to post "I am concerned that we will look like meanies if we fight back", or "I find it concerning that we aren't firing more teachers with the terrible shape schools are in", or "Obama's birth certificate concerns me".
soccer1
(343 posts)I think I get it. A "concerned troll" would be a person who frames a statement as a "concern" but in reality is in opposition to policies put forth by the democrats. A Romney/republican supporter in disguise. Well, you never have to worry about me. I'm an Obama supporter (2008 and now). In fact, my "republican" husband is a strong Obama supporter, (2008 and now.) Have I passed the "loyalty test"? Just kidding.......

(270 posts)...that I began "lurking" on DU. I found it by accident having clicked on a link to The Top 10 Conservative Idiots from another blog. That got me hooked (I still miss it). Whenever I could, I would thoroughly go through all the great stories on the home page and get news and perspective I wasn't finding in other places. Add the various forums full of intelligent, passionate, and humorous individuals of all stripes, and soon I found myself coming to DU more often than any other site, news or otherwise. A few months ago I finally decided to join up and be a part of this engaging community. I have a pretty full schedule most days but try to participate when I can. I've come to recognize many, many names and the various styles, stories, and opinions that go with them. I'm happy to now be part of all of this. I hope to get to know you all a little better in posts to come.
