Bid to restrict transgender bathroom use advances in Montana

HELENA — Montana election officials on Wednesday allowed a conservative group to move forward with a proposed ballot initiative that would let people sue for emotional or mental distress if they spot a transgender person using a public bathroom that doesn't correspond to their gender at birth.

The decision on the measure came the same day that President Donald Trump announced he wanted to ban transgender people from the military.

The proposal in Montana would require people to use public restrooms and locker rooms designated for the gender listed on their birth certificate in schools, universities and government buildings, similar to a law passed by North Carolina and legislation being pushed by Republican Texas lawmakers.

The ACLU of Montana and other opponents of the measure say it violates anti-discrimination laws and would lead to economic losses similar to those North Carolina experienced.

1. How do you "spot" a transgender using a bathroom?

I mean that as a serious question. Is this to mean that there will be some creepy bathroom monitor that determines people's gender or just a bad drag queen or woman dressed as a man? What about someone who transitioned and looks better than others? Will someone be demanding to view their private parts or their original birth certificate?

This is beyond creepy. A bathroom is a place for a person, regardless of gender or gender identity to relieve themselves and to do a bodily function that we ALL have to do, regardless of gender and how we got there. Everyone should be able to do it and do it in privacy. This sounds like a complete invasion of privacy!!!

Doesn't have as much to lose as N Carolina.

What's the big fucking deal? For years, many small businesses have one or two bathrooms, just designated as Restrooms, nothing more. Starbucks has gone to, " Gender Neutral." It will be some expense for places with large bathrooms with many stalls. The MOMA restaurant has done this in a classy way for well over a decade. The stall doors go from the ceiling to the floor...privacy...which is very nice even if it is a single gender restroom.

6. These bills were clearly designed by men

Not that I have ever seen the inside of a men's room, but women's bathrooms have these things called stalls. You don't just whip it out and piss in a trough (as I'm told guys do at some stadiums). Women do their business behind closed doors.

As far as locker rooms. My gym has private changing areas in the locker rooms. Yes some people strip down and parade around naked, but there's the option to change behind a closed door (set up like a dressing room at a store).
