Got horrible news today.

Last edited Thu Jul 27, 2017, 02:09 PM - Edit history (1)

My uncle who lived out in San Diego passed away. He was the brother of my mother. I never met him in person (long story) but we've spoken over the phone. I'll never forget how crushing this day has been to my family. I'm still relatively young so I havent had to wrestle with the reality of death so deeply until today. The details were so gruesome. I was on vacation with my family including my parents and my other aunt and uncle on my mothers side. My other uncle received a phone call from my late uncles landlord. He said recieving the call caused him to panic before he even knew the purpose. My late uncle dealt with serious problems, most of which I didn't learn of until today. His main problem, or at least the one that became fatal, was alchoholism. The coroner from San Diego called us and informed us it appears that my uncle tripped an hit his nose. There was blood on the wall and around his head where they found him, lying halfway onto the bed, the amount of alcohol in his system thinned his blood and he bled to death. I don't think any of us have fully come to grips with what has happened and I'm honestly not completely sure why I feel the need to post about it on here. I know DU is a very diverse community when it comes to views on religion and spirituality, but I'd like to think he's in a better place. I've been fortunate enough to have never seen my family go through something so devastating until now. Please keep us in your thoughts/prayers.

I've lost all four of my uncles at this point and it never gets any easier. My thoughts are with you, keep the rest of your family close, you can get through this together.

It's extremely difficult when it's your first major loss I'm not so young and my first loss was my father a few years back. It changes our world in ways. It changes us. All I can say is you'll get through it, your family will too.. it's a hell of a process, grieving, but afterward, we remember the sweet things about our loved one, and we find peace within. I'll light a candle for you and your family in your time of loss, to find that peace in the end.

While it is never easy, this is such an unusual series of events leading to this tragedy. I am very sorry for your loss. I think that imagining your uncle is in a better place is a reasonable and healthy approach to dealing with this, and it may be more true than any alternative. Hugs and peace to you and your family who is hurting.

What a horrible shock for all of you. It's so hard to lose someone you love, and it's like a punch in the gut when it's out of the blue like this. I'm so sorry.

Family is family in all of its weird and tragic circumstances. I have my share of family whom I have little contact with, but hearing about someone being in the hospital or dying is always difficult. We often say things because we don't really know what there is out there and we just want the person to not be grieving. Grief is a natural process though and everyone feels things differently. My only words to you are to allow your self to feel all of your emotions, even ones you think are odd and inappropriate. Maybe use this opportunity to learn about your uncle, not just the tragic circumstances of his life and death, but the humanity and good that maybe he was able to show to his siblings or others during his life.

People are complex, tragic, and beautiful creatures.
