who wishes all this dirt on Romney wasn't coming out until after the Republican National Convention? He is still only the "presumptive" nominee. I'd prefer for all the dirt to come out after he is the full fledged official nominee.

(15,189 posts)The Ron Paul kooks are voting for delegates this weekend. Paul may still be in play. If this is all true, it may pull more towards Paul.

(15,189 posts)Divided is a good thing for Obama. Just like Ross Perot was good for Bill Clinton in 1992.
I hear a sucking sound. LOL!

(15,682 posts)then I guess it wouldn't seem like a good thing. But Ron Paul won't beat Obama.
that romney vs obama will result in obama winning, but if it is ron paul vs obama, then i believe he has a better chance at winning simply because he will get the majority of the independents, republicans will vote for anyone except obama, and some democrats down on the wars and our foreign policy, and guantanamo, will vote for ron paul (all though a small percentage.) And I also believe that Dem's around the country aren't nearly as hyped up and excited as they were for the first election, which could return in lower voters at the polls. Hopefully Romney does win the nomination, because then we wouldn't have a problem

(3,894 posts)Just for his position on mj, he'd pick up a lot of young voters. They'll look past much of anything else he says as status quo and likely similar to what Obama did, does, or will do, with very few exceptions, is my worry.
I've listened to youngers, since I'm a mmj user, about RP, and they think he's great. Try to tell them that he's not the same RP of a few years ago with many of his planks, point to his son and his goofiness, doesn't seem to matter. They don't care, they want MJ legalized, they'll worry about all the rest later.

(15,682 posts)don't want pot legalized. They want to keep the medical mj dispensaries here in California without the government controlling it and messing up what is a good thing.
Every single one of the kids I know says the same thing. I don't use it so I have no first hand opinions to offer. On the other hand, I think all drugs should be legalized.
I don't believe Ron Paul could win either way.

I worried that another candidate might be better for the GOP.
But Truly, if Romney is disgraced the GOP will fail big time. Maybe for 2016 as well.

(15,682 posts)But I also have faith in the Obama campaign. They'll use it to their advantage. I would bet on it.
phantom power
(25,966 posts)It's profoundly unlikely that Romney isn't the eventual nominee. But in the far-out case that he isn't, it just causes the GOP convention to become a late-stage battleground, and anybody coming out of that will be very weakened. Bad as that is for the GOP, Romney is their strongest candidate.

(5,024 posts)Is there anyone they could pick who would bring out the base to ensure the Senate even if they can't get the President? That's my concern.
phantom power
(25,966 posts)I'm just making a more narrow point that I don't think the timing of the dirt is a problem. There are other aspects that (to me) continue to be worrisome, especially down-ticket, as you say.

(5,024 posts)The country CANNOT afford more GOP control - at least not while there are retirement age people on the SCOTUS. As much as I care about legislation and the year-to-year governance, the current SC scares the living shit out of me.

(53,061 posts)Does this change the big money dynamic? Would the effects of all these findings be different after the big money weighs in? Would they not have come out after the big money weighs in? I'm really interested in what you're thinking here!

(8,419 posts)Keep the pressure on them.
Part of Romney's base (Evangelicals) are having to twist themselves into a pretzel to vote for what they believe is a cult member. Now they will have to twist further to ignore his lies and off shore tax shelters.

(19,485 posts)Everyone considers him the actual nominee now.

(1,569 posts)Ron Paul is NOT a serious threat--he has no financial backing, no serious Republican infrastructure, and the spotlight would quickly expose his real positions. For instance, he isn't pro pot--he simply thinks it isn't a federal issue and he wants states to pass their own laws, even if they are strongly for criminalization. So, under Paul, some states might get legal pot, where across a border it could be a life sentance to have a single joint. Of course that isn't even an issue--the President doesn't get to make or repeal laws. Paul would never be able to get congress to do any of the things he holds dear.
Romney is going to be the nominee, even if it means he's severely hamstrung. The big money is already in his accounts, throwing a Jeb Bush into the fray at this point would result in a candidate without a war chest. Worse for them, any candidate other than Romney will not be vetted by primary voters (or already rejected by them).
Hit him now and pound on him later. If this actually hurts Romney, it is nothing but good news for us.
drmeow
(5,024 posts)I hadn't thought about that. Although haven't there been cases of donors asking for their money back?
Spike89
(1,569 posts)A lot of the money Romney has gotten in has already been spent on infrastructure for the upcoming election, all the expenses he's incurred on the primary trail, and if he did get in a tussle at the convention, he'd spend a lot more there defending/fighting. Maybe some of his huge warchest could be repurposed, and without a doubt many repug supporters would just dig a little deeper to make up for most of the losses--maybe they spend some of the money down-ballot repubs were hoping for and we regain the House?
Kick him now, then keep kicking him until they switch to another horse (doubtful) then kick the new horse. Right now, Romney is the biggest threat to Obama, if they had a better option who could win, they'd have throw him/her at us already.
