Tillerson may make early exit from State Department: report
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expressing growing frustration with the Trump administration and may be considering resigning from his role, according to a report from CNN Monday morning.
Though the former CEO of ExxonMobil Corp. has said that he would stay on as the top U.S. diplomat until the end of the year at least, several anonymous sources told CNN over the weekend that he might leave earlier than that.
Sources familiar with Tillerson conversations with friends outside Washington admit the secretary of State may just be venting, but they sense his doubts about President Trump are growing.

(4,139 posts)or any of the other clowns that were appointed to the Cabinet. At least he is a competent administrator and wouldn't continually embarrass the country. Exxon has 73,500 employees and over $200B in revenue. Trump's little operation would be chump-change to E-M.

is invalid. A few weeks ago, Tillerson was complaining that the State Department and the Government itself does not run with the efficacy of Exxon where he was the final decision maker. The fact is only a dictator's government would run the way he wants. I assume that is true of Putin's Russia.
Not to mention, there are differences. When Exxon has budget problems, it lays off poorly producing parts of the country. The US can not simply tell Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana, that after looking at what they contribute and what they cost, the country is downsizing and they are being let go. Not to mention, the government belongs to citizens, not employees or the share holders. (though not a few Congress people seem to think they work for their donors -- ie shareholders.)
Having read much that John Kerry said in the many interviews given last January, the description of how a successful diplomat gets others to agree with him has more similarity to the skills needed to be a legislator. He spoke of needing to understand the real positions of others and where they could move to find if there is any patch of common ground to agree on. This is 100% different than the CEO experience where he defines the terms. It is no wonder that where Kerry seemed to thrive spending weeks in detailed negotiations, Tillerson was exhausted after a series of meetings that were a few hours each. Not to mention, Kerry praised the excellent backup that the State Department professionals provided him as essential for anything he accomplished. Tillerson seems to see them as people he doesn't need.
That is the State Department, so what of the Presidency? The same diplomacy is needed with the Congress which needs to be won over not ordered to implement what the President wants. The President needs to deal with an even wider array of issues and he needs the same type of diplomatic skills that the diplomat needs. In addition, a president needs to communicate with the country - while Tillerson does not even want to speak to journalists. Also the President, unlike the SoS, has to be a politician and get elected.

(9,895 posts)the country needs to run more like a business....
You are spot on in the comparison to downsizing and laying off employees when it comes to resource sinks like the Deep South and the Mountain West and Plains...study after study shows that the state's most likely to buy into this tripe are the very ones that TAKE more per tax dollar given to the nation as a whole....your Alabamas and West Virginias and Mississippis all extract more federal dollars than they pay and usually by a wide margin over the more traditionally blue states like your New Yorks and Californias...
Thanks for making the point clear for me to use!

(59,503 posts)I would be very happy if I never heard that claim again, but know that I will. The oddly it likely made more sense in the Eisenhower years when most of the better companies felt a responsibility to both their employees and the cities they had facilities in. (Then again I was only a child in those years, so that sentiment could well be more from Norman Rockwell photos and other idealized views of the country.
I was stunned in the 1980s as to how much a culture change there was at AT&T when it became more driven by short term goals to make their stock price rise than the more long term philosophy that had decades before led them to fund even pure research at Bell Labs. It was stunning reading the NYT business section where every announcement of a big company laying off thousands led to jumps in their stock.

(35,454 posts)So much easier for Putin to have Tillerson in place. And as I said before, neither the real headline or article puts this down to Putin. This is all down to 45 & his crew.

(11,101 posts)What possibly made Rex Tillerson qualified to be Secretary of State? Before the election you could have made a list of 300 people that might be candidates for the job and Rex Tillerson would not have been on it. The only reason he was picked was because of his personal relationship with Putin and Exxon's relationship with Rosneft.
Me.
(35,454 posts)While Putin & Tillerson are close (awards given), I'm sure he would prefer Tillerson to stay in place, much easier for Putin when he has an ear he can whisper into. So I consider this possible move on Tillerson's part, all 45. Ego rubbing against ego.
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)While that may be or may have been true, if Tillerson is bailing, one would have to assume that Tillerson is no longer useful to Putin and that Putin is "pulling the plug" as the OP title suggests.

(11,101 posts)I would love to hear your thoughts on why the CEO of Exxon is the Secretary of State.
Me.
(35,454 posts)What does that do with him having had enough of not being able to choose staff, not being in actual foreign policy meetings, with said Putin no less. and not having a say in policy?
You also seem determined to ignore the fact that an OP was posted that referenced Putin, but linked to an article that didn't mention him at all.

Lawyers should refrain from stuffing words in my mouth I haven't said. That means I don't want to hear that I am a "Tillerson Supporter", a "Neo-Liberal in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry", or any other smears.

(35,454 posts)and names being called. Just Heard Today That Mattis, McMasters & Tillerson are a sort of triumvirate against 45 regarding Afghanistan. Somewhat ironic in the case of McMasters as he was always complaining/criticising PBO for his strategy. Nobody in this admin is happy with 45 aside from sycophants like Ross, Price, De Voss & Muchie etc., all of whom have a deregulate agenda. I expect Tillerson will go. He's not used to taking guff from anyone.

(67,109 posts)all of this Trump BS! He doesn't even have much of a staff, does he. I haven't looked, but how can he be SoS operating with hardly any staff. This Trump administration is so F'ed up, IMO, one would only hang onto benefiting from the shenanigans. Tillerson well may not feel like a full investigation of him. Who know, maybe it already is occurring. I can't imagine a SoS salary means much to Tillerson.

(733 posts)Putin probably wanted his best friend Tillerson as SoS to ensure sanctions were lifted.
Trump has been trying to lift sanctions since he got inaugerated.
And Tillerson is realizing that being responsible for State Department only means he gets to be Trump's lapdog.

(19,066 posts)Keep repeating it, I don't know why this isn't the lead story every night. This whole business with Trump and Russia stealing our Deomcracy has always been about the Oil deal with Exon (when Tillerson was leading them) that Obama and Hillary killed.
This deal is the only thing Tillerson cares about, if the sanctions are not going to be waived he has no reason to stay in the job. I think Congress tied Trump's hands on this.
It's Putin's #1 issue too, if Trump can't deliver on this to him he has no reason not to burn Trump. If that oil deal doesn't go through, Putin's fall back position is creating total chaos in our country by exposing Trump and harming our Democracy. What would be funny is if Putin hacked our voting machines next time to the tune that Trump wins 100% of the vote, that would cause total chaos here.
magicarpet
(14,154 posts)...... And gives 100% of the votes to Trump.
I only wish that would happen.
Wouldn't the shit really hit the fan.
Then maybe they would be forced to remedy the bogus DRE electronic vote registering, electronic vote tallying, electronic counting, no paper receipt or ballot, no ability to really and accurately recount, prone to hacking, prone to secretly rig, excessively and deplorably gerrymandered bogus US voting infrastructure and systems.
Then with these improvements, corrections, and fairness restored, Democrats would start winning more elections.

His only interest in diplomacy was to facilitate oil deals with Saudis and Russians. He already went to Saudi Arabia with Trump and worked out the Texas oil refinery deal between Saudis and Exxon. He can't do the Russian deals now that sanctions can't be lifted so he might as well quit.
