IT MAY seem hard to believe now, but there actually was a time when the Kardashians weren’t famous. When they weren’t making headlines day in and day out and no one really knew their name.

It was retired American football player, broadcaster, actor, and later convicted felon O.J. Simpson who changed all that for them.

It was in 1994 that the now-famous family first found themselves at the centre of a media storm, when Kris’ ex-husband Robert Kardashian served on the defence team of his best friend O.J. Simpson, who was accused of killing his wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

They were front and centre in the “trial of the century” — which is credited with giving birth to the 24-hour news cycle and had more than 100 million people tuning in to the coverage. The many players became as famous as any Hollywood actor and a new type of star was born - the reality TV star.

Though it would be relieve us to no end to place blame on Simpson, it was (and still is) the viewers who choose to tune into that programming who allowed us the precious commodity that is a Kardashian.

If there is no demand for a product, the product would simply be another Clairol Touch of Yogurt Shampoo or Betamax.
