Trump Administration (Quietly) Preparing Texas Wildlife Refuge for First Border Wall Segment

Texas Observer

For at least six months, private contractors and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have been quietly preparing to build the first piece of President Trump’s border wall through the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge in South Texas. The federally owned 2,088-acre refuge, often called the “crown jewel of the national wildlife refuge system,” could see construction begin as early as January 2018.

If the levee wall is constructed, it will essentially destroy the refuge. The proposed plans call for building a road south of the wall and clearing refuge land on either side of the wall for surveillance, cameras and light towers.

One of the top birding spots in the nation, soon to be ruined beyond repair.

God I hate these bastards.

A significant element of their ongoing attack on all things worthwhile is the elimination of wilderness and protected wildlife areas. They absolutely HATE wilderness -- particularly the public ownership and control thereof -- and want these areas all privatized and monetized.

Spanish moss drapes from trees and noisy chachalacas welcome the morning dawn as a malachite butterfly floats out from the shadows. Step into a rare tropical world at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Wait until the issue of private ownership of land abutting the border comes up. Conservative, property-owning Texans are no doubt eager to bend over for Trump on just about any other issue. But if their property is threatened, take cover...
