One would hope that his personal medical crisis would make him, and his party, more sympathetic to those Americans facing the same without the resources that McCain has at his disposal.

(21,581 posts)Can McCain vote from his hospital bed or do you actually have to be in the senate chamber to vote?

(21,581 posts)I wonder if he will resign. If I had that prognosis I would rather enjoy my family than spend any more time in congress.

(65,409 posts)even verbally abusive toward her around aides, and he seems to barely tolerate his adopted daughter.
He enjoys being in the Senate, among his colleagues (especially friends like Lindsay Graham), being interviewed on TV, and being front and center in major Senate situations.
He scrambled desperately to hold on to his seat last election, even at his advanced age and despite the fact that his reelection was iffy, specifically because being in the Senate is what matters to him. He married into a HUGE fortune, so he certainly didn't need the job or its perks for financial reasons.
But even as he tried to maintain his treasured maverick image, these past several years he has always eventually folded and voted the party line, because he feared losing his seat if he didn't.
Maybe with this unfortunate turn of events, knowing he won't ever run again for reelection, he will have the courage to do what he knows is right, because the party leaders, the deep-pocket dfonors, and the rabid base can no longer threaten his hold on that seat.

(17,863 posts)that ACA is so bad that it should be repealed? I can understand those folks who are voting yes for political expediency (donations for the next election) or future benefit (job with company or lobbyist after leaving the Senate). What compelling reason does McCain have to vote yes except he is a true believer.

(14,167 posts)He was most certainly going to vote for the Republican death plan. He very rarely votes against the party. I don't personally think he is as conservative, but he's perfectly willing to toe the line in order to maintain his power and prestige.
Being a Senator is obviously one of the most important things to him. If he returns to work, as he intends to do, I hope it is with a new understanding. The Republican value system wouldn't have him treated at all because he's too old. Treatment would be considered a waste of money.
The Republican plan that he supported would just let him die.
