BOOK: "Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America"

The author of this book Nancy MacLean (Duke University Historian) was on NPR's The State of Things yesterday afternoon. The book explains even more of the history behind the underhanded, stealthy extremist minority of billionaires that is controlling our government. It helps explain why our US Senate was trying to ram such an unpopular "healthcare" bill through even though only 12% of Americans wanted the thing. The 'culture of accountability' wherein billionaires use very large carrots made of huge sums of money waved in front of politicians' faces (and threats of destruction if the politicians don't do the billionaires' exclusive bidding) has resulted in a "government" that only exists for a minority of greed-driven, racist, sexist, wealthy extremists. This didn't begin in the 1970s or 1980s - it started long before that.

I haven't read it yet but Jane Mayers' 'Dark Money' is probably another good one.
I HAVE read 'Wrapped in the Flag: A Personal History of America's Radical Right' - by Claire Conner, whose family were John Birchers. She relates personal experience about growing up amidst the extreme, selfish, cruel world of libertarianism that later became the Koch Brothers' 'Tea Party' (old man Fred Koch was a founding member of the John Birch Society).
Any or all of these will give a good history of how the HELL we got into today's HELL - and with them what must be done to get us the fuck out of it - if it's even possible now.
