That's what his health care vote would support.
It would have supported removing care from those afflicted like him.
My sympathy meter barely nudges in his case for that reason.
We're in a life and death war for health care.

(28,270 posts)while all of his is paid for by us....
I will not say what I'm thinking but personally I would not want to die a rich man who condemned millions to sickness, death and bankruptcy to benefit the very wealthy.

(15,222 posts)We are not "them". The very essence of our DNA is different from theirs.
But they have reduced the playing field to a point where we've got to recognize that they are NOT like US. We've had no choice to determining that playing field. They get to determine it because they are the ones in control at the moment.
If McCain votes to remove health care from Americans while having just had his very own mortality thrust in front of him AND being helped by the health care available to him and not available to everyone - then I will lose whatever sympathy I may have for him. I will lose that sympathy because of HIS actions; not because I have changed. I will lose it because he will have caved and because he will not have cared about his fellow Americans. I still care about my friends and neighbors.
We can no longer afford to worry about becoming "them". We have no choice but to fight "them" on "their" terms. Anything less and THEY keep winning. Learning to properly fight in a battle does not necessarily reduce one to the lesser side. There are times when it's necessary, realistic and the smart thing to do.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)how far do we go before our behavior is identical to theirs?
hamsterjill
(15,222 posts)To defeat them. Because if we do not defeat "them" then "we" cease to exist because that is THEIR goal and purpose.

(869 posts)... and that is the memory of McCain questioning Comey, where is disjointed thoughts already where an indication of his illness.
I wonder if he is just as mentally impaired in this particular vote? It could be a symptom of his illness, just as the questioning was. If he were healthier, he might have been one of the more moderate ones. Just speculating....
hamsterjill
(15,222 posts)It came as no surprise to me after seeing his questioning of Comey that he was shortly diagnosed with a brain issue.
Regardless of his capability, he is being allowed to vote. And many of our lives hang in the balance.

(869 posts)I think there is agreement on that. But what I am saying is that his vote and stance today may also not reflect 100% cognitive ability.
hamsterjill
(15,222 posts)I'm simply saying that there's nothing we can do about that.

(10,602 posts)I no longer buy the argument about being like them. There is a point crossed when you have to abandon such argument. As noble as it might be there are situations where such attitude is self defeating. Sometime you have to answer in kind.
And it is not that you should be unsympathetic. But if McCain votes to take away health care, it is a cowardly and self serving act that needs to be called. In such case I have no problem in telling him personally you are getting what you certainly deserve. Knowing the consequences of your vote and doing it anyway is unforgivable.

(2,769 posts)I have zero for him at this point because he obviously has zero for anybody else. This includes my uncle batting all kinds of things cancer related. He needs the ACA to stay in place so all of his cancer related pre-existing conditions aren't used against him. While my uncle and many others like him are dieing because they can't get health care. McCain and his ilk will make sure they get the get the best and it will be taxpayer funded.
Your expectations of good and pure purity of those on the left is what got us here. We can only turn the other cheek so many times before running out of cheeks to be slapped. Well, we've got good sized red welts on both of them and there is nothing left to offer up. Now we have to stare this mess right in the face and stop the hand from slapping us again.
I expect better out of hypocritical and mean spirited politicians that have ignored the numerous come to god moments dropped right in their laps over the last 8 months; only to ignore them. My prayers go out to the millions of people that will be affected by the loss of healthcare and the millions more that will have to suffer through watching their loved one fall ill and/or die because of the unwavering malice in the heart of McCain and those like him.

(51,611 posts)I am not a hypocrite and I believe in the "Golden Rule". He was most likely going to vote to basically kill and bankrupt me and my family. I will suffer unnecessary pain for a few years before that eventually happens or I kill myself first..."plan B". He's lucky he has great medical care and won't lose his home and his family's savings like 32 million will (myself included). I am 100% serious and NOT exaggerating, I wish I were in fact.

(51,611 posts)all of the people all of the time and not just those in good health with a lot of money. Even better, he could prove it by returning to congress (there is a fairly good chance of that since I know people who have experience with these specific medical issues) and start re-writing a bill and it would be along the lines of single-payer. Shit, he could go even further and name it McCainCare so that the GOP could take ownership of it.

(19,204 posts)Those that have all the gold, rule. I'm sick and tired of having these evil bastards walk all over everyone. Wat has "being nice" ever gotten the Democratic Party? You're experiencing it right now, THAT'S what it's gotten us. Total control by uncaring, selfish, cheating, lying, misogynistic, racist, vote suppressing thugs. Call me crazy, but that "Golden Rule" tactic is NOT working out very well. On a level playing field I'm all for the "Golden Rule", but when the playing field is tilted 45 degrees (or more) toward the GOP? Nah........sorry. It's time to try a different tack.

(15,222 posts)You care about the ordinary Americans who are going to be hurt by the actions of the Republicans.
You have merely understood the playing field which THEY have forced upon the rest of us. We must fight THEM on THEIR terms. It was not our choice either. It has been their choice to take things to the gutter.

(27,815 posts)... it is impossible to forget that while McCain is receiving the best medical care available, he and his party are engaged in trying to ENSURE that their fellow citizens go without that kind of care.
It is equally impossible to forget that McCain was willing to put a whack-job like Sarah Palin within a heart-beat of the presidency - not because he thought she was up to the job, but because he thought the physically attractive Tundra Trash would be the game-changer that could get him elected, the consequences to the country be damned.
I am hopeful that McCain can, with the course of treatment being recommended, live on for many more years. And my heart goes out to his family, who are no doubt sick with worry.
I would wish that his current health problems would open his heart to the plight of those he is willing to condemn to certain death - but I'm not holding my breath. I've learned the hard way that Republicans have no heart to be appealed to.

(819 posts)What happens to his seat if he steps down? Which I assume will be the most likely outcome after todays diagnosis... Is there a special election?
