And I am very sorry to report that the President of the United States is part of it.
Do you think it was just a coincidence that the eighth name from the meeting was so slow to leak?
It was about the sanctions all along and how much they had affected the money-laundering operations of American and Russian "oligarchs".
Just as it is a coincidence that Mitch McConnell picked today to have a vote to repeal "Obamacare". They are hoping to distract the American public from this earth-shaking news.
The dots are coming together and the picture is beginning to come into focus.
The eighth person in the meeting, which, as far as we know, no one came forward to identify that was in the meeting with him, was Irakly (Ike) Kaveladze. According to the NYtimes from an article from 2000, yes 2000:
https://mobile.nytimes.com/2000/11/29/business/laundering-of-money-seen-as-easy.html
A Congressional inquiry has found that it is ''relatively easy'' for foreigners to hide their identities and form shell companies here that can launder money through American banks.
In a a nine-month inquiry that subpoenaed bank records, the investigators found that an unknown number of Russians and other East Europeans moved more than $1.4 billion through accounts at Citibank of New York and the Commercial Bank of San Francisco.
The accounts had been opened by Irakly Kaveladze, who immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1991, according to Citibank and Mr. Kaveladze. He set up more than 2,000 corporations in Delaware for Russian brokers and then opened the bank accounts for them, without knowing who owned the corporations, according to the report by the General Accounting Office, which has not been made public.
The report said the banks had failed to conduct any ''due diligence'' into identifying the owners of the accounts.

Folks, this is big.
The repeal of Obamacare story today is an intentional distraction from this story. The Wall Street story this morning, calling for Trump to be "transparent", is also just a distraction. This is a very big story.

They will have to pick and choose whom they prosecute, in my opinion.
But, it was about the sanctions all along. Or rather the wish to have the sanctions over-turned. This could be very bad news for Comrade Putin, also.

(4,533 posts)Different governments define money laundering differently. Most require that the funds derive from criminal activity which is then disguised as from a legal source. Hence Walter White bought a car wash.
It is not clear that all or even most of disguised Russian money starts out from crime. Many Russians want their money out but don't want Putin to know they are bailing out on Russia. Or they don't want people to know they are so rich in case they face extortion. Or they don't want creditors to find their assets. Etc.
So we can't just lock such people up absent proof their money is dirty.

I guess we'll have to see where the chips fall.
I don't think money laundering is all of it though, I think there are a wide array of crimes at all levels from Trump on down.
But since the wheels of justice turn slowly, I suggest in the meanwhile we all invest in popcorn stocks.

(4,533 posts)It will not be easy to prove money from Russia was earned dishonestly.
There are trillions of dirty dollars floating in the global financial system. How many have been captured so far? A fraction of one percent I think.

(63,221 posts)I am thinking that Trump never meant those casinos to ever turn a profit. They were nothing more than money laundering operations which was why he didn't care if the business itself was doing well. The casino business - due to its high cash flow - was the perfect front for a laundering operation.
