(9,426 posts)Ever noticed that the democratic party has the BEST former presidents? The republican presidents go home and take care of #1, themselves. The democratic presidents try to ease life for working class people, one way or another. The living example of FAMILY VALUES. One wife, no assault charges (grabbing females) no bragging, no lawsuits. Just quietly get on with doing good works.

It might be extremely beneficial if people in general came to understand conservative and liberal morality, and that there are tremendous overlaps, as well as differences. Cons see moral issues differently from liberals, literally a genetically prewired disposition more focused on protecting the stability of the group than protecting individuals. Liberals, of course, tend to think one man's freedom of personal behavior should be limited by where another's nose begins, and not much else. Very different, but most civil issues have common grounds to meet on.

I believe very strongly in "just doing it" and not talking about it incessantly.
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

(14,858 posts)This is President Carter, the individual. He is a good, kind, and loving person. I believe Mr. Carter would be doing this if he followed some other religion, or none at all.
You would have us believe that only Christians would work hard to help others. That is just not true. Many of the volunteers and donors for Habitat for Humanity, and for other excellent charitable endeavors worldwide are not Christian.
HopeAgain
(4,407 posts)Never, ever came close to implying that. Please feel free to let me know where I did if you disagree.
President Carter has always been open about his faith and I'm just saying that his actions are consistent with his faith, unlike many who claim to act consistent with Christian faith but only impose their biases and world views on others.
I never said non-Christians couldn't have principals or values or be altruistic. I was merely pointing out what I believe to be a good example of the Christian faith.
Mariana
(14,858 posts)If a non-Christian was the subject of the story would you say, "THIS is Christianity"? If not, why not?
Most of the Christians you don't approve of are quite sincere in their Christian faith, and strive to act in the way they think God wants them to. They just interpret the book differently. What they do IS Christianity just as much as what President Carter does.

(4,407 posts)Actually sounds like this is about your beliefs, not mine, which I will leave with you...
BTW, Jimmy Carter quote: "My FAITH demands - this is not an option - demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to make a difference."
Have a good day!

(10,303 posts)I don't think HopeAgain was stating anything along the lines of only Christians would work hard to help others. I believe the point was through Jimmy Carter's good deeds, he is a testament to his Christian faith. Good deeds can be done by people of all religious beliefs. Would Jesus himself help build a house? I believe so. Mohammed? Moses? Buddah? Richard Dawkins? Yeah, I think they'd all pitch in somehow.
I think HopeAgain's message was more like "look at Jimmy Carter and compare to someone like e.g. Pat Robertson". Both of these people profess to be Christians. Mr. Carter is a leader in his church, as is Mr. Robertson. One goes out and builds houses. The other is known for his homophobic, racist, and Islamophobic sayings and not necessarily for his good deeds.
So let's spin it this way: Who's the better Christian - Jimmy Carter or Pat Robertson? I decline to judge the individuals, I leave that to God - besides I don't know either of them personally. I will however judge the actions, and my personal belief is that Jimmy Carter's actions appear to me to be more Christ-like than Pat Robertson's, and as such I support HopeAgain's statement in that I believe Mr. Carter's work through Habitat for Humanity is a sign of a good Christian. But you are also absolutely correct Mariana in that there are many great people who are not of the Christian faith who do wonderful work for all kinds of organizations.
Both of you raise valid points

Henry Blodget
Oct. 15, 2012, 6:40 PM
The head of a northeast Ohio charity says that the Romney campaign last week ramrodded their way into the groups Youngstown soup kitchen so that GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan could get his picture taken washing dishes in the dining hall.
Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, said that he was not contacted by the Romney campaign ahead of the Saturday morning visit by Ryan, who stopped by the soup kitchen after a town hall at Youngstown State University.
Were a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations, Antal said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. Its strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there, and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.
He added: The photo-op they did wasnt even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall...
Upon entering the soup kitchen, Ryan, his wife and three young children greeted and thanked several volunteers, then donned white aprons and offered to clean some dishes. Photographers snapped photos and TV cameras shot footage of Ryan and his family washing pots and pans that did not appear to be dirty.
