(3,894 posts)I'm an atheist and would love to think that Dems would go to the point of being entirely anti-mythology of all types, however since we don't and since we claim to prefer personal religious freedom, I'm thinkin' we shouldn't promote this aspect of hatred. There are enough legitimate political and direct philosophical points to attack.
I don't think we need to encourage religious bigotry as a reason to not choose Rmoney.

(15,682 posts)He is entitled to his opinion as much as the next guy. People are allowed to vote for whomever they want for whatever reason they want.

(15,682 posts)Is it part of an ad or something that I missed?
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)People should vote against Romney for whatever reason most suits them. That he is a Mormon is a reason that will suit many people, most of whom he is counting on to vote for him, and it is perfectly right and proper to cheer their prejudices being put to work in a good cause.
Lionessa
(3,894 posts)cheering prejudice, EVER.
WTF?
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)You wouldn't be prejudiced against me because of my religion, now would you?
Lionessa
(3,894 posts)should be cheering prejudice like that, when that guy is just as likely to say "I don't vote for colored people, women people, or Democrats" to those on our side. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it looks likely bigotry, not a choice to rebel against those connected with an org that discriminates. It looks like flat out bigotry, and I don't thing we should cheer that, even if it removes a vote from Rmoney.
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)It may well be the only decent and useful act of their entire lives.

(3,894 posts)I'm guessing then it's okay with you when Repubs cheer racists who won't vote for Obama. Otherwise, my respect drops even more.
Granted you probably care less about my respect in this matter, and that's a further reflection on you, so please don't make yourself one that should be entirely ignored because of severe hypocrisy.

(95,247 posts)I fail to see the difficulty you seem to have with this simple rule....

(95,247 posts)What is in my interest I support openly, and what is not I oppose openly, without apology or pretense.
There are a number of fundamentalist Christians who have serious reservations about voting for a Mormon: more power to them, may they stick to their convictions and refuse to assist a member of a Satanic cult in his quest to mis-rule the United States of America!
There are a number of white people who have serious objections to voting for a black man for President; they are emblematic of all that is wrong and vile in our society, and ought to be damned and shamed as the racist trash they are.
There is no contradiction whatever in these statements, because they aim at achieving the same end, the defeat of the most reactionary elements in our political, social, and economic lives, which is, unreservedly, a good thing, to be sought and work for by whatever means come to hand that promise to be of good use.

(1,761 posts)I too am an atheist, and find cheering prejudice rather repulsive.
I respect many things about the Mormon faith, most especially the value they place on family and community.
All too often I see people on this board display the same behavior they criticize in others.
Those individuals (hypocrites) truly disgust me.

(3,894 posts)I'm an atheist, I'm prejudice against all mythology. I would still not promote bigotry or cheer it, in order to take down Rmoney, particularly when "we" are always and often correctly frustrated by the other side cheering racism. I just don't think we should embrace their sick tactic.

(9,214 posts)Of course I can remember when people used to have reasons to vote for someone instead of against the other someone. I also remember that whoever won, it didn't really make that much difference. It does now.

(12,154 posts)wouldn't vote for anyone but a "real" Christian. which by his own definition, he presumably is. He probably wouldn't vote for someone whose skin isn't lily-white either, or for a woman, or for anyone from the LGBT community.
He didn't say, "I won't vote for you because I'm a Democrat," which means the old codger is probably a republican - maybe even a bagger. ugh.

(25,556 posts)it always fascinates me to see these racist/homophobic/anti-(fill-in-the-blank) verbalize this crap to someone's face. But it is never cause for cheering.
It is well to remember that these people are out there in force! As a friend of mine used to say, "Yeah? You're next in the barrel."

(2,522 posts)Wouldn't it be a bad thing if someone were to refuse to vote for someone who is Muslim?
In many ways, Romney's candidacy is historic, in a manner similar to Kennedy or Lieberman. If elected, he'd be the first president who isn't a mainstream Christian in the Protestant/Catholic sense. It's been mostly overlooked in this election.
It will be an empty triumph if our party wins on the votes of the prejudiced.

(5,105 posts)It would be excellent if DU took a stand that voting any for or against a candidate based on their religion is bigotry. Send it out to Fox Noise, WNutD, conservative media and th' librul media. It would be interesting to see who would print/mention it, and could result in more ppl coming to check out DU.
