There are quite large bets placed and even pigeon pirates who set up snares and other things to try and capture trained homing pigeons worth a lot of money. The winner is whichever pigeon returns to its coop the fastest based on distance

The best birds can go up to 350,000 USD. The winners are chosen many different ways but the main one is average speed over distance. Pigeons launched in the same race that must travel further to their coop are at no disadvantage considering that the greater distance is negligible for "tiring out" the pigeon, ie- if its within a certain amount of distance it does not decrease the pigeon's end result
