NY Times got fooled by a very obvious parody North Korea twitter account

Here's the correction they issued:

Correction: July 4, 2017
Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article attributed incorrectly a Twitter statement to the North Korean government. The North Korean government did not belittle a joint American-South Korean military exercise as “demonstrating near total ignorance of ballistic science,” that statement was from the DPRK News Service, a parody Twitter account.

Here's the tweet they fell for:

Look at some of the other tweets on that account - pretty insane that the NY Times couldn't tell it was a parody account.

"Because of an editing error" indeed.

And this happens across the board. Sloppy mistakes like this because everyone wants to "publish" so quickly.

But they do pretend to be legit - and don't self-identify as a parody account, as many parody accounts do.
