FCC Approves For the First Time 100% Foreign Ownership of US Broadcast Stations
By David Oxenford on February 24, 2017
The FCC yesterday released its first decision approving 100% foreign ownership of a group of US broadcast stations. This comes after significant relaxation of the FCCs interpretation of the foreign ownership limits which, less than 4 years ago, had been interpreted to effectively prohibit foreign ownership of more than 25% of a company controlling broadcast licensees (see our article here about the 2013 decision to relax the restrictive policy). In yesterdays decision, the FCC approved the application of an LLC controlled 100% by a husband and wife, both Australian citizens, to acquire complete control over several companies that are the licensees of 7 AMs, 8 FMs, 13 FM translators, and 1 TV translator in Alaska and Texarkana, Arkansas and Texas. The FCCs approval requires that these individuals get FCC approval if any other foreign owners are added to their company, but otherwise imposes no other significant conditions on this acquisition. Given the simple 50/50 ownership of a husband and wife in a closely held company, the ownership reporting and analysis conditions imposed on public companies who have been allowed to exceed the 25% threshold in the past (see our article here and here) were not required in this case.

The Russian state-sponsored news outlet Sputnik is entering the Washington, D.C., radio market in an effort to push back against what it called "constant attacks" by U.S. media companies.
Sputnik Radio announced Friday that it has taken over 105.5 FM, which previously aired bluegrass music.
In a statement, Mindia Gavasheli, the editor-in-chief of Sputnik's D.C. bureau, accused U.S. news organizations of unfairly attacking and criticizing the news outlet, which is funded by the Russian government.
"Were glad to finally be able to directly address our listeners in Washington. During the last few months Sputnik Radio has become the target of constant attacks in the US corporate media," Gavasheli said. "And often the people who wrote or spoke about us didnt even bother to listen to our broadcasts first."
Sputnik was launched by Rossiya Segodnya, a Russian state-run news service, in 2014 and has been accused in the U.S. of being a propaganda tool of the Kremlin.

(7,813 posts)BBC America has been available in the US for years. I get France 24 in English via antenna. I don't feel particularly propagandized by that. I grew up watching CBC channel 9 out of Windsor, Ontario (did you know that Sesame Street uses French instead of Spanish?).
But none of those countries has been a traditional rival, either. American TV and radio is worse by far with propaganda. Is anyone but a mushbrained dolt45 voter likely to be swayed by what they broadcast?
Don't answer that.
