They are: California, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Some of these are "red" states, so Sarah Halibut Sanders can STFU about how a refusal to comply must be politically motivated.

(1,580 posts)frustrated, to say the least. Said they've gotten a lot of calls. Directed me to the State Board of Elections. The woman I spoke with there said they will not give out SSN# or DL#s. All other info is available under our open records act, and can be found online anyway.

(29,718 posts)our SOS hasn't received the letter and is accepting calls to let him know the public's opinions. The young woman I spoke to didn't seem like she thought it was a good idea, but who knows what that means. Our SoS phone number 501 682 1010 should anyone wish to call him. Ask for the elections department.
Sorry that Crosscut has your records.

(11,100 posts)The form asks for either the DL# or "at least" the last four digits of the SSN.
The name and addresses of all Arkansas voters are accessible in an easy internet search. There usually is no party identification in Arkansas voter registrations since we have open primaries.
Arkansas has one of the broadest FOIA laws in the country (I know, right?). Unless someone put their full SSN on the registration (which should be confidential), I suspect everything in a registration form is subject to a FOIA request.

Kris Kobachs Own State Just Defied His Bogus 'Election Integrity' Commission
Source: Talking Points Memo
By MATT SHUHAM Published JUNE 30, 2017 4:41 PM
The vice chair of President Donald Trumps shady election integrity commission has added his own state to the growing list of states that will not fully comply with the commissions requests for sensitive voter information.
Thats right: Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach will not hand over information to his own commission.
In Kansas, the Social Security number is not publicly available. Every state receives the same letter but were not asking for it if its not publicly available, Kobach told the Kansas City Star Friday. It was a change in stance from Thursday, the paper reported, when Kobach said Kansas would provide all requested information to the commission.
Kobach added Friday, hedging somewhat: If the commission decides that they would like to receive Social Security numbers to a secure site in order to remove false positives, then we would have to double check and make sure Kansas law permits.

NastyRiffraff
(12,448 posts)They WANT personal information, including "partial" SS numbers. (And don't be fooled by that "partial" bit either. The last 5 numbers are unique so the rest can be easily extrapolated.) They can get publicly available information themselves; they don't need to send out a letter asking for it. Many states charge for it, so they can pay for it if they want it badly enough. To my knowledge NO state includes SS numbers, partial or full, as public information.
They have said that all data collected will be made public.

(13,485 posts)But what's really stupid about this whole thing is the reason Trump and his cronies want this info. They say so they can cross reference the data looking for voter fraud. That's the stupidest most illogical reason they could possibly have to gather all US voter info. This can not possibly be why they want it. The states can do this themselves or already do. Piling it up in a new db on the Internet is utterly asinine.
There is some other reason... period. What it is... that is anyones guess and I can think up a lot of possibilities.
Any state that goes along with it even with the availability excuse is walking into something they will regret as will we all.
