After Donald Trump was elected U.S. president, a lot of Americans vowed to move to Canada. But a South Carolina couple is actually going ahead and doing it.
Heather and Robin Vargas are packing up their belongings and travelling more than 2,600 kilometres to a new home in Halifax in December.
Heather told CTV News Channel she and her husband began making plans to leave the day after Trump won. They began with reading up on the logistics of emigrating, then started reading about what Canada and Canadians are like.
We did more research into Canada as a whole and we quickly fell in love with the country, Vargas told CTV from Charleston, S.C.
The couple decided that Canadians values aligned with their own, unlike those of President Trump, his administration and his supporters.

(6,252 posts)My gf and I talked about moving to Ireland last Dec. I have two elderly parents I can't abandon or we would leave too.

(35,454 posts)I looked for a while at buying a vacation house in Calais, ME minutes away. Back when a house could be bought for $30k. Too cold for me.
But mild winters? Personally love Halifax and would move there if I could.

(22,907 posts)They are in for a disappointment if they are used to the climate in SC. Halifax has more snow than Toronto. The highs on Saturday and Sunday are 66F.

(31,261 posts)Best choice would be the border town with San Diego. You can get to Cali when you want to. Arizona Border towns are decent also.
I am surprised the couple chose Nova Scotia. Nice enough people and great scenery, but winters there are sort of cold compared to South Carolina.

(4,558 posts)But as soon as we see a "Reichstag fire" here in the US, we're out of here to Argentina. Have bank accounts, jobs, and a home there ready for us. My husband and I will NOT be wearing pink triangles in US concentration camps.
We have elected a president that repeatedly and loudly demonstrates all 14 of the 14 established and agreed upon characteristics of a Fascist, and worse seems to have the devoted following to support it.
