The series of auctions, organised by Rockefeller and Christies before he died in March, reflects the long-held belief by the Rockefeller family in institutions that serve society, a family spokesman said.
Rockefeller, who led Chase Manhattan throughout the 1970s and presided over an international expansion of the bank, held influence far beyond New York and Washington. In 2010 he was among the first in a cohort to agree to the Giving Pledge, alongside Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett, Ray Dalio and Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. The pledge commits billionaires to publicly donating the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.

Mr Rockefellers art collection comprised about 15,000 pieces, according to Fraser Seitel, the Rockefeller family spokesman. The sale next year, which will span some 2,000 individual works, will include Impressionist, post-Impressionist and modern works of art, as well as masterpieces by American and European artists, Christies said. The auction house declined to name specific works that would be included.".....(more)

(420 posts)I recall a segment on 60 Minutes about the Giving Pledge Group and the Gates', Warren Buffett and other rich folks were interviewed. There was one guy who's "charity" was a "free market/anti-tax" organization that would benefit no one but the 1%-ers but that counted in this group as "philanthropy". When I googled the story about the art sale (I couldn 't get past the paywall from the link above), it had a story about the art sale with several charities listed but a few were named after the Rockefellers so I couldn't tell what they supported. Hopefully, this won't add more $$$ to the Koch type takeover efforts.

The Stone Barns Restoration Corporation, known for the restaurant Blue Hill, is also among the list of beneficiaries.
The Rockefeller family name is indelibly linked with arts, culture, business and philanthropy around the world, said Guillaume Cerutti, Christies chief executive. It is a fitting tribute that the auctions will be held at Christies New York in the heart of Rockefeller Center."
