A man who found a kitten encased in concrete at his home fears it was sent as a threat from a polygamist Mormon sect.

The tiny cat was discovered alive but audibly in pain, inside a tube in the back yard of Isaac Wyler, a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Andrew Chatwin, who has also abandoned the FLDS, claimed it was intended as a warning to Mr Wyler to stop speaking out against the church.

The FLDS achieved notoriety when its leader Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison last year for sexually assaulting two underage girls he had 'married'.

...I shudder to imagine what they can do to a fellow human being. It seems like you have to kill a piece of yourself in order to contemplate that. My soul is already seared from learning how people in Auschwitz and Tuol Sleng were tortured, but this horrific act still managed to get to me.

My wife and I took in a few stray cats (some of whom were abandoned and possibly abused by former caregivers) and made sure they all had a forever home with lots of love and attention, so this story affects me on another level, too.

1. The man who found the kitten on his property left the FLDS and has been a target of abuse and threats from them ever since.
2. The sheriff, who is a member of the FLDS, laughed at the report.

The source for both of these pieces of information is the man who left the FLDS himself, so it would be good to get corroborating evidence. On the other hand, the photos exist and there are apparently lots of witnesses, including people who helped rescue the kitten and people who tried to save the kitty's life in the days following.

The final piece of evidence is that the FLDS does other horrible things. They drive young boys from their their communities, for one thing. They marry young girls - children - to old men in polygamous marriages. There are reports of horrific abuse from people who have left the cult.
