Q. Why is George Bush so certain that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction?
A. Because he has the receipt.

(5,179 posts)Bill Maher is occasionally brilliant but when it comes to women -- and race, apparently -- he's a putz and should STFU.

(20,317 posts)I think that whole "uncle Tom" stereotype is incredibly destructive. You're telling young men in particular that they aren't 'real men' unless they take on a persona that's going to get them absolutely nowhere.
On an unrelated point, I think Aisha Tyler is one of the very few people who's actually been held back by her own good looks. I saw her doing stand-up comedy once, and she's really good. But somehow comics don't seem to click in quite the same way when they're ridiculously good-looking.
Chorophyll
(5,179 posts)that's a very astute observation. I could probably do an entire post about male and female comics and how they look, and how those looks affect their comedy (for example, if you're fat, is it necessary for your comedy to be fat-based?) but it would probably turn into a multi-chapter treatise. And there's nothing funny about multi-chapter treatises.

(731 posts)stereotypes were bad in any form, or is it okay in certain situations? Must of missed the memo.

(34,857 posts)Maher can be perfectly spot on but he's absolutely wrong when he spews his bullshit about what a black president should really be.

(3,621 posts)I've always found Maher obnoxious. I've been a Wayne Brady fan for quite some time, but now, thanks to this OP. I have seen the brilliance of Aisha Tyler.
Okay, I have to say it. I love Aisha Tyler. I had no idea before today that she is a comedian. Yes, I'm not that hip and a bit slow in catching on to some things.
With a hearty laugh and a twinkle in her eye, she's a blue streak talkin', funny as hell, cut to the quick, comedy genius. She has a podcast called Girl on Guy, to which I am now subscribed. Yes, I consider it my equivalent to the podcast that my DH regularly follows, Marc Maron's WTF.
Let the games begin!

(56,177 posts)Or was it his general comments about black people, etc...or an accumulation of them?

(5,178 posts)I do know that the just about the only decent, honest and truthfully moderated debates I've seen on TV have been on his shows and for that and for paving the way for The Daily Show and Colbert, I applaud him.
Brady seemed to come off pretty harsh to me but I'm not a regular listener of his. Maher should invite him on the panel.

I despise Bill Maher, and shame on all who promote him.

(71 posts)at least that's what a lot of people here say. as far as i'm concerned, neither comedians nor anybody else gets a free pass to say any ignorant, nasty, hateful thing they please and get away with it.
loyalsister
(13,390 posts)I have heard him say a few things I agree with, but nowhere near enough to cancel out what he says about women and minorities.

(25,960 posts)We get it, Wayne. You are an authentic black man. That doesn't have to mean being violent.
As always, I'd guess no one is as hard on Wayne Brady as Wayne Brady.
BklnDem75
(2,918 posts)as an example of how blacks shouldn't act, I'd be pretty pissed off too. The Wayne Brady show ended in 2004. Maybe Bill should give it a rest.
Romulox
(25,960 posts)Wayne essentially created this meme (the "nerdy blackman"...hahaha isn't it funny, he's really gangster, like all "real" black men! ) himself.
It was one of the singularly most funny skits on the Chappelle Show.

(43,182 posts)I know some of you guys love Maher, and I have no idea as to where Wayne Brady is coming from, but the guy has to be the most slapworthy pompous ass regardless of his politics.
His slapworthyness is right up there with Sean Hannity, who I claim to be the most slapworthy person in the world.

(8,556 posts)Maher can and has made the same point about the president without using anybody's name. When you use somebody's name in an unflattering manner like that, they have every right to come back and give you some of the same.

(9,213 posts)he showed it off one time on Whose Line Is It Anyway and it was a weird thing for him to be bragging about.

(27,461 posts)I thought that joke by Maher was highly racist, and I have seen comments with a similar racist theme including if I am not mistaken Michael Moore, unfortunately.

(23,545 posts)He made fun of him for being old and hard of hearing. I wanted to puke.
MrSlayer
(22,143 posts)Wayne Brady is the Sinbad of today, the "safe" black guy. Because a guy is nice doesn't mean he's a punk. I'd be pissed too if my name was considered synonymous with being a wuss by a guy whose ass I could kick up and down the street.
The hooker thing is something of a cheap shot but still funny.

(26,355 posts)Granted, he's a professional asshole who's frequently an asshole towards Republicans and religious lunatics, which makes me laugh.
I, on the other hand, am only an amateur asshole.

(12,151 posts)If he wanted to seriously address whether Mahr is being flip about perceptions of "black" personality, fine. But the violent fantasy / chest thumping just makes him look like an ass.
