Signed into law, August 14, 1935.
Major Amendments:
1939: Payments to spouse and minor children; survivor's benefits
1950: COLAs established (Cola and Tax increases occurred afterwards every couple years under ammendments until 1972)
1951 and 1954; classes of workers extended; SS benefits minimum retirement age established at 62.
1962, working women's spouses and children got benefits if dependency shown
1965, Medicare/Medicaid added; divorcee's could get benefits
1972, SSI added for disabled people of working age (and dependents) who were not eligible for retirement. COLA tied to CPI (automatic increases); also during the 1970's, payment percentages tied to income re-adjusted to help people who did not qualify for pension or were low-wage workers.
1977, indexing error re-adjusted.
1983, NCSRR established, additional tax on higher income earners floated, Social Security Trust fund "excluded" from the general budget. All government workers had to start putting into Social Security, and were eligible for benefits.
1990, All state and local workers not covered under a pension had to start putting into Social Security, and were eligible for benefits.

the 1939 legislation is universally termed the "1939 Amendments"---plural. Similar usages in many, if not most, of the other years. I believe total is well over 100, but can't nail it down.

Thank you again.
