I was somewhat willing to accept that a poor white Trump voter could get suckered in by his con. Flim-flam men have always been around, and they can be effective in tricking desperate people in particular.
But at this point, we KNOW that Trump is promoting bills that would hurt the poor and working class, of all races. Including Trump's own base. In fact that only reason the bills haven't become law is that they are not mean ENOUGH for some Republicans.
In spite of this, Republican house candidates are still getting elected. Trump still has his same supporters. Apparently because he hates some of the same people they hate.
I'm really about ready to give up on these people and to be physically unable of feeling sorry for any misfortune that might befall them.

(53,066 posts)but I don't want to remake the Democratic Party to cater to them because I know full well that would require abandoning everything I believe. I find the argument that all we need is a radical message based on class and they will vote Democratic to be naive at best.

(31,893 posts)We have always been for the "last". It's messaging and attacking our opponents . . . They've proven they like the gutter by voting for Trump.
For all of their Jesus scrap - they showed their asses. They should make the choice - poverty or locking hands with with gay couple in the same financial boat.
I'm not kicking anyone because of who they are because it makes Trump voters happy.

(15,438 posts)their support and votes for the GOP & Trumputin that create disastrous policies for them.
Unfortunately, they get a free ride on the backs of Democrats - some who lose their seats to Republicans because they do the right thing for the American people - and still vote R, hoping that R-policies will only affect PoC, 'sinful' women, LGBT people, etc. They're too dumb to realize that will never happen; that all policies shoved through that crash our economy and take jobs, will affect ALL people in the United States...and beyond our borders.
If only they weren't so infested with hatred and fear, the R-Party would lose power within one election cycle.
Working Americans who support the Republican Party still, are a special kind of stupid.

(13,776 posts)You are so right! Democratic politicians lose elections because they try to do the right thing for everybody, and for their trouble they get kicked in the teeth for it by their ungrateful Republican constituents.
I really do wish that GOP voters and GOP voters alone could reap what they have sown. I don't wish them harm, exactly--I just wish that they were the only ones who were harmed by their choices.

(1,773 posts)They need to be bred out of existence somehow. They are nothing short of being a total embarrassment to this country in the eyes of civilized human beings the world over. They are a lot like the Confederate statues and monuments that most fair-minded, decent Americans today support removing from public squares but that they still lovingly defend: Embarrassing relics of a past era that should be tucked away in some dark corner somewhere to collect mold.

"But the other basket -- and I know this because I see friends from all over America here -- I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas -- as well as, you know, New York and California -- but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well."

It was assumed no college degree equated to lower income which wasn't true in the case of many of voted for Trump. (3,675 posts)of not having a degree and that is why many trump voters were considered poor white working class when they really weren't, just because they lacked the college degree. having the degree or not determined what income catagory they were assumed to be in for some who were gathering voting statistics.

(4,308 posts)These people believe that Liberals have secretly rigged up a giant welfare system which is eating up most of THEIR tax money and makes up most of the federal budget, a scheme which shovels SNAP, AFDC, and basic assistance money into the pockets of Black, Latino, and Muslim druggie loafers who refuse to work. Fox News and cohorts have not allowed these people to learn about the dramatic changes to the welfare system enacted during Bill Clinton's presidency, and even back then they vastly overestimated the size of welfare checks (I was there; I remember). Thus we hear these people suggesting that a five-year lifetime limit be placed on welfare, or that a work requirement should be placed on able-bodied SNAP recipients, or that unemployment compensation recipients be required to look for jobs, or that immigrants should not be automatically placed on welfare. Etc.

(21,506 posts)There is a lot of noise out there.
I know several of them. Some are the nicest people you would ever want to meet until you talk politics.
Every single one of them watches fox news daily and have for at least a decade. Some have been voting Republican since Nixon at least. It was a much different party then and fox noise is well...Propaganda at best. Facebook is also full of complete BS.
Basically what I am saying is that these people have been and are being duped. Now you could certainly argue they are letting it happen but when i actually talk to most of these folks about any number of subjects trying to just stick to the issue. More often than not they are in total agreement or at least mostly agree on what the solutions should be and typically closely mirror my own.
Thing is they think republicans are fighting for these things. Or think that democrats are working to destroy these things.
The ACA is a perfect example. Call it Obamacare and they hate it but if it is the ACA they don't want to lose it. They have direct experience with the ACA. They have been spoon fed what to believe about Obamacare.
Forget they are obviously the same thing when you try to tell them that they often don't believe it.
So do I have sympathy for them? Yea in the same way I have sympathy for anyone being conned.
Some of them of course. Some are just complete knuckle draggers that couldn't give a rats ass about anyone but themselves never realizing their happiness is tied to everyone else. Those folks can kiss my ass.

(6,797 posts)when you see these idiots on t.v. praising Trump. They are too dumb to realize it's them it's going to hurt first b/c most of them make minimum wage so they can't afford insurance so have to rely on Medicaid then have to take Grandma out of the nursing home and take care of her at home. Then all hospitals around shut down b/c they can't afford to stay open doctors and nurses move b/c now they don't have a job so there's no medical care for miles that if something happens you will die before you get help. You reap what you sow.

They blame the party that conceived, implemented and fights like hell to maintain the programs that make their lives bearable and that they heavily rely on, but continually vote for and worship the party that not only fought against every one of those programs and continues to do so, but that holds them in such contempt and disdain, only using them to gain and maintain power.
