Steelman appeals to rural Missouri in Senate TV ad

Source: AP

JEFFERSON CITY — Republican Senate candidate Sarah Steelman is appealing to rural voters in a new ad that mocks competitor John Brunner for his St. Louis roots.

The TV ad notes that Brunner lives in St. Louis. It also highlights a $10,000 donation by a Brunner family foundation to an organization that Steelman characterizes as "an extreme animal rights group." The ad features a cow, saying in a cartoon bubble that it needs therapy. By contrast, Steelman declares in the ad that she loves to hunt.

A Brunner campaign spokesman said Monday that Brunner understands both businesses and family farms and has received support from across the state, including the endorsements of several agricultural groups. Brunner has distanced himself from the donation, noting it was made by one of his adult children.
