President Trumps willingness to flout convention and stoke controversy may be starting to hurt him, even among previously strong supporters.
Trump has defied political norms ever since the start of his campaign two years ago. He brushed aside calls to become a more conventional candidate, and it paid off, making him the nations 45th president.
But Trumps approval rating, always low by historical standards, has been sliding since he took office in January. Crucially, many recent surveys detected an erosion of his support among Republicans and independents.
Trumps job performance wins approval from only 35 percent of the public, while 64 percent disapprove, according to a new poll released late last week from The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That is one of the worst findings yet for Trump in any major survey.
The same poll found that 65 percent of Americans think their president has little or no respect for the nations democratic institutions and traditions.

(52,253 posts)consider the rasmussen poll -- a notoriously right-leaning poll -- that donnie touted recently, showing 50% approval, 50% disapproval.
break it down, and the 50% approvals were:
31% strongly approve
19% somewhat approve
ok, but check out the flip side for the 50% who disapprove:
42% strongly disapprove
8% somewhat disapprove
that's actually mind-boggling. i don't think i've ever seen a poll like that.
of people who disapprove, 84% disapprove strongly.
that's a staggering level of intensity!
strongly disapproves are *very* hard to win back, it's very difficult to see how donnie *ever* becomes an actually popular president, just looking at the polling results.
worse, donnie's shtick is a con job. once a con man loses his mark, it's very difficult to win that mark back. and con men usually don't try. they just move on to the next con.

(19,201 posts)actually think his popularity is RISING, according to the latest Rasmussen poll, which is the only poll they put any stock in.
There are none so blind as those who WILL NOT see!
I'm sure the Huckster Honeydew thinks he's wildly popular as well. He's a master of self-delusion.
