Obviously, NBC made a hash out the involuntary transition from Ann Curry to Savannah Guthrie (with more drama continuing to unfold as a result of skipping over Natalie Morales in the process).
I rarely watch the Today Show (partly because I find the segments with Jennifer Bush totally unwatchable), so I already have one foot out the door. I'm wondering is this switch is a step to increase or decrease the willingness of the news to call bullshit when a right-wing bull craps in a china shop.
Ann seemed too timid sometimes, but she had some good qualities:
Curry asked the question: "do you think that members of the Tea Party caucus know how to govern, or are they do they understand that standing up for a cause is not the same as governing?'"
Curry described the anti-worker political bullying as an outrage: "We turn now to that outrage, you just heard about in Wisconsin, where the Republican-controlled senate voted last night to cut collective bargaining rights for public employees."
Curry grilled Gov. Christi on the "a coordinated" right-wing effort to "scapegoat" unions for problems "created by Wall Street" and the "banks" and she made the point that "it doesn't sort of make sense...that the unions really are to blame."
Curry criticized the Rep. Ryan budget because "poor people will suffer under this budget."
Curry grilled ex-Rep. Gingrich for "increasingly stepping up your characterization of President Obama as a 'food stamp president,' interestingly, in the lead-up now to South Carolina....Are you intentionally playing the race card to win votes?
Savannah has been cast in the role of the usurping evil step-mother, but she -- too -- had some good qualities:
Guthrie graduated near the top of her Georgetown Law School class and went on to get the highest marks on her state bar exam.
Guthrie was very complimentary of Chief Justice Roberts for siding with the liberal wing of the SCOTUS when he affirmed the the President's health care act.
Guthrie chastised Ex-Sen. Santorum for taking "cheap shots" at the President and for trying to "reignite the culture wars in America."
Guthrie was formerly married to Al-Jazeera producer Mark Orchard and then in a long term relationship with Democratic activist Michael Feldman (Vice President Al Gores traveling chief of staff his last presidential campaign).

(11,304 posts)her hands off other married men. I don't know if it is true. But lets hope she will do her job and let Mrs Lauer in peace. Evidently she had a relationishp with Matt. His wife isn't happy and will follow him to the Olypmics. Pretty sad when you can't trust your husband who likes to cheat also. Curry is a class act and will get back in the game. She is a true professional

(20,819 posts)screwed around with and who keeps thinking that married men are her personal harem. She's the reason why he and his wife separated for awhile and apparently one of the the reasons Natalie Whorales didn't get the nod to replace Curry was because his wife threatened to divorce him if he requested that she be the replacement (he has a lot of influence on that, given his status on the program).

(51,308 posts)seriously, I never heard this nonsense before, but if there's a real story then I'd be interested to read it.

(550 posts)Because I really enjoy their local news program here in NYC, and it gives me updates as I get dressed before work in the morning. On days that I go in late, or am off and watching TV that's not Sesame Street (two kids under 3), it's most certainly NOT the Today Show.
Morning TV shows (I refuse to call them news programs) are less and less about news and more about shilling something. I hate celebrity interviews, and the real important interviews can be seen online later.

(14,061 posts)Veira got on my nerves big time. But it is Matt Lauer I can't stand. His ego is obviously driving the direction of that show.
I used to watch "Today," but it has gotten just too tabloid and is a total waste of my time. But one of the straws on the camel's back to me was Lauer's interview with Trayvon Martin's relatives shortly after the shooting, where he insinuated that perhaps Trayvon had it coming. I don't know how they held it together.
As I said, I cannot stomach Matt Lauer.

(23,741 posts)Katie and Meridith powered that show. Unfortunately Ann Curry was not as much a personality as those two, and therefore could not help keep Matt's star shining. He is the dullest of dull hosts. Really, NBC doesn't have to look very far to see who really is thew drag on that show.
AngryOldDem
(14,061 posts)It's clear who's in charge of that show. The only question is, who's in Lauer's cross-hairs now? Al? Willard? Natalie Morales? And how long will it be before Guthrie gets dumped?

that said, I do like Savannah. I have nothing against Ann Curry, but if the rest of the show thinks she's not a fit, she was doomed
She will be paid off handsomely and will probably breathe a sigh of relief to be off that show,

(51,308 posts)I'm right in their demographic..never a fan of Anne, but they handled that very badly. No one should be treated that way.
Meredith was great...I miss her.
Savannah is not right for the show...I think Natalie would have been a better choice.

(7,429 posts)I liked Ann, but she wasn't the right person for the job. But Savannah is definetly not for the job. Why didn't NBC do what Live with Kelly is doing?? Rotating hosts until they can find that perfect person to be the co-host. Especially because they want to keep that idiot Lauer. He was so smug when Ann Curry left. It was so awful to watch. Painful even.
Oh and the rumor here is that Natalie Morales was passed over because she was the one who had an affair with Matt.

Look at Robin Roberts on GMA. She always looks top-notch. Classy and cool even under all the pressure she's been under lately. That woman knows about fashion. Ann Curry - not so much.

(34,447 posts)I think the core problem is Matt Lauer. He's smarmy, a bad interviewer, has a stupid haircut and cheats on his wife--what's to like?
I'm sticking with Bill Press in the morning and saving myself all kinds of aggravation.
