He will fire Mueller.....because he knows that Mueller will surely bring him down if he doesn't fire him. He will also sling every bit of garbage that he can conjure up in an effort to stop the investigation or minimize its impact.....fire Mueller....repeatedly and obviously lie.....increasingly trash the press.....intimidate witnesses.....incite his followers to violence.....you name it!
Sure.....all of those acts would make an obstruction case inevitable, and they have an exceedingly slim chance of working, but he will do everything I've listed, and more, in spite of those realities. Why? There's no reason for him to avoid doing the only things that might possibly allow him to wiggle out of horribly serious charges in an effort to avoid the much less serious charge of obstruction, and he won't avoid doing them in spite of knowing that they most likely will not be effective. In his mind, he has no choice. He's caught and he knows it.
Pundits keep asking why Trump continues to act in a way that makes him look guilty. Occam's Razor gives them the obvious answer: He's acting like he's guilty because he IS guilty.
If he doesn't fire Mueller and do everything I've listed above, he would in effect be giving up and consigning himself to being in prison for the remainder of his life. HE'S NOT GOING TO GIVE UP AND GO QUIETLY!
He's going to fire Mueller, Rosenstein, if he refuses to fire Mueller (and I predict he WILL refuse to fire Mueller.....he will not forever destroy his hard earned reputation to save that bum, Trump), and anybody else in the pecking order until he eventually finds his Bork, who will do the dirty deed.
I would not be shocked if at some point he and his crew flee to Russia. Again, if everything he tries fails, and all of those acts WILL fail, his only way to stay out of prison would be to flee. What would he have to lose? Maybe he kept his private security under contract to cover just this type of contingency.....because he was guilty, he knew back then that there was a reasonable chance things would collapse as they have, and that he might need them. I simply do not think he will sit and await his eventual arrest if he concludes that the arrest and conviction would be inevitable. I think he can lose the Secret Service at Mar-a-Lago and get to a nearby airport to his waiting plane, and head to Russia.
One final possibility that would not shock me: Melania eventually being exposed as a Russian plant. That would surprise me to some extent, but it wouldn't shock me.

(6,390 posts)He can live with impeachment. that's just like getting fired.
But if Mueller and Co sink their teeth into financial crimes, who knows how far back they'll be able to go...and disgorgement along with doing time...that's a lot worse than getting fired.

(1,128 posts)I don't think Rosenstein would survive firing Mueller so he would resign and then Trump would have to keep going down the chain of command to find someone to do it---Trump is a consummate showman and realizes how bad that would look

(15,805 posts)Trump lives in the moment, and firing Mueller will give him the satisfaction of revenge, whatever blowback that comes after that doesn't matter. Rosenstein is his tool, a wuss to be used and then tossed under the bus when he's no longer useful, and firing him will impress upon his fans and critics, both, that he is their master. Trump actually believes he can make all his problems disappear just by firing the only two men who are in a position to harm him. He thinks the country is behind him, the press is easily neutered, and the opposition party is toothless and quickly cowed, so what does he have to lose?
It doesn't seem out of place to wonder if Melania might have ties to the Kremlin, and at this point, nothing about Trump would surprise me.
