and many more in hospitals. What's interesting is that while Theresa May refused to meet with victims, the queen and her grandson William visited a shelter and met with some victims.
It's looking like the plastic cladding made the fire spread rapidly and fire escapes were beyond inadequate. Boris Johnson was mayor when the building was refurbished. That should destroy his ambition to replace loser May.
Bye bye Theresa

(1,660 posts)No way would this building pass code in the US. The whole building was a firetrap.

(58,785 posts)fully engulfed like that seemed like some ridiculously unrealistic movie version of a fire, or one in some underdeveloped country. It literally should not have been possible for it to spread so dramatically and go up like that.
In fact, reportedly the official instructions to residents were to remain in their apartments in the event of fire until the fire department evacuated them. Fortunately, most didn't trust them, and some are alive because of that.

(269,186 posts)Lots of building code violations and many were well known as tenants complained loudly and publicly.
There are entire families missing.
Is this simple neglect or state/local government terrorism?

(34,138 posts)Most of the people who got out that I saw interviewed said they heard no alarms at all. One man said he heard one on the second floor - which was not a residential floor - but it was very soft.
The other part of the story is that although building codes require fire walls between every floor and every apartment that are supposed to keep fire from traveling for up to 60 minutes, that protection was breached during the recent refurbishment and had not been reinstalled. Official policy is that residents should stay in their apartments during a fire with the assumption that the fire walls would protect them from spreading fires. So even for those who realized there was a problem, they may have followed the policy, not knowing that they did not have the mandated protection.
Why were there no alarms on the residential floors that were audible? Why none in the apartments? Even without the firewall protection that should have been in place, fire alarms would have saved lives IF the people had known that they needed to get out.

(11,112 posts)What a horrible tragedy. My heart breaks for all the victims, their family and friends, and all the first responders. I can't imagine what the firefighters are going through as they search for remains.
So touching that the queen and William visited a shelter.

(269,186 posts)Material used in the cladding that covered the Grenfell Tower was the cheaper, more flammable version of the two available options, an investigation of the supply chain has confirmed.
Omnis Exteriors manufactured the aluminium composite material (ACM) used in the cladding, a company director, John Cowley, confirmed to the Guardian.
He also said Omnis had been asked to supply Reynobond PE cladding, which is £2 cheaper per square metre than the alternative Reynobond FR, which stands for fire resistant to the companies that worked on refurbishing Grenfell Tower.
White cladding on Grenfell Tower. The supplier said it had been asked for Reynobond PE rather than FR fire resistant
We supplied components for a system created by the design and build team on that project, said Cowley.
