Pence hires outside counsel to deal with Russia probe inquiries

By Ashley Parker June 15 at 4:58 PM

Vice President Mike Pence has hired outside legal counsel to help with both congressional committee inquiries and the special counsel investigation into possible collusion between President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

The vice president’s office said Thursday that Pence has retained Richard Cullen, a Richmond-based attorney and chairman of McGuire Woods who previously served as a U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.

Pence’s decision comes less than a month after Trump hired his own private attorney, Marc E. Kasowitz, to help navigate the investigations related to the Russia probe, and a day after the Washington Post reported that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is now widening his investigation to examine whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.

You know, at this point I wouldn't even be surprised if that was a thing and actually happened now. Nothing makes sense anymore it seems. Logic left this planet long ago.

Richard Cullen, chairman, McGuireWoods LLP, Richmond

Why he is influential: He is chairman of McGuireWoods LLP, the largest law firm in Virginia. The Richmond-based firm employs more than 1,000 lawyers in 23 offices around the world. He joined McGuireWoods in 1977 and has developed a roster of A-list clients since then, including former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay; Tiger Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren; and former FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter.

Cullen also served as attorney general of Virginia from 1997 to 1998. In 1991, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia by then-president George H.W. Bush.

Latest developments: McGuireWoods has been named “Law Firm of the Year” in the banking and finance law category for three years in a row in a U.S News annual ranking of the nation’s best law firms.

He will no longer lie or allow himself to be used by trump to defect blame. The more people close to trump that lawyer up will be covering their ass ( and therefore throwing trump under the bus) all in an attempt to keep themselves out of prison.

It's another bad day for Cheetolini

The MSM has right from the start given Pence the easy pass. Unfortunately that's the easy pass to ascend to President so MSM gullibility is both irresponsible and dangerous. A WaPo reporter did it again last night discussing the OoJ charge...just inserted, out of nowhere,"we know Flynn was fired because he lied to the VP." No, that's the TrumpRepug story with as little credibility as "Comey was fired for the way he treated Hillary Clinton."

From Day 1 both Rachel and Joy disputed this Pence shielding BS as impossible based on the facts...and a paper trail. Yet I've heard nothing but affirmation of this smokescreen outside MSNBC.

As head of the transition team, he's been Trump's water boy from the beginning, and he's lied repeatedly. He is complicit, a co-conspirator, and he better have a damn good criminal defense lawyer.

Didn't Trump's lawyer Kasowitz just get done telling all the White House staff that they didn't need to hire lawyers? And here's the Vice President, deliberately ignoring Trump's own lawyer's advice! Is that loyal, Donald? Are you going to put up with that? Doesn't Pence realize how bad this makes you look, or doesn't he care?
