Can someone please explain to me why the public always seems to forgive GOP scandals?

Sabotaging the 1968 Paris peace talks, keeping the hostages in Iran in 1980, Iran/Contra, lying the nation into a war with a country that had nothing to do with 911, and now the Russian hacking all seem to be non-issues, yet lying about a blow job warrants impeachment.

For folks that have not lived in the Bible Belt or experienced any interactions with evangelicals in their daily lives, allow me to explain something to you. For decades, the GOP has worked to align itself with the churches in the Bible Belt and the evangelical community. They have now raised multiple generations and brainwashed them to believe that the GOP is the party of God and Jesus and that Democrats are demonic offspring of Satan. I lived and breathed this as a child of the 80's in the south and I see it having metastasized throughout generations of families. They DO NOT CARE what the GOP does because they have surrendered critical thinking and even the desire for critical thinking once they accepted that the GOP is the party of God, seeking to restore America to God's favor...I know that sounds crazy and it is but trust me that's their core, it's been fed to them as a steady diet of bastardized old testiment scripture for years. They are true believers and will always side with the GOP because in their warped reality, the GOP is fighting God's battles. Add in a healthy dose of bigotry, misogyny, and ignorance thanks to a depleted public education system, and you've got a whole generation of voters who steadfastly support the GOP, believe that the earth is clearly only six thousand years old because that's what the Bible says, believes that Jesus is literally coming soon and we should side with "The Jews in Israel" because they're God's other chosen people and if they can restore them to Faith then the end times will come, that Muslims are the outcasts of abrahamic faiths and should be treated as such, and because Fox News speaks to all of their ingrained outrageous beliefs, well all of those beliefs are just reinforced and ingrained further. THATS what we're facing right now...and I fear it will take generations to unravel that mentality, if we ever can.

5. Mainstream news has barely mentioned them

mostly because when they were current events, they were anonymous leaks and there was no way to verify them independently of the leaker. When the 24/7 "news" channels started up in the 90s, that changed, and Democratic non scandals were breathlessly reported by hyperventilating wingnuts while Republican scandals again barely deserved a mention and were soft pedaled as normal policy.

Face it, the broadcast media buyup started in the 1970s and the people who bought up all those independednt stations all ove the country were not our friends. We can count on nothing from the broadcast media but corporate approved, whitewashed "news" that is more infotainment than real information. The Fourth Estate will not be televised so turn that thing off.

The only thing to do is to support independent print media when and where you can find it.

And Democratic scandals are carefully rehearsed over and over again for their incurious audiences. Republicans scandals aren't necessarily forgiven, but they are certainly forgotten. Someone had a post about Poppy Bush the other day on another website, and I reminded folks of his lame-duck middle-of-the-night pardons issued Christmas Eve 1992 to stop the trial of the Iran/contra perpetrators. From the puzzled reaction I got from some normally canny people, it was obvious that none of them remembered it at all. But I'll bet you could drop the name Marc Rich at any number of conservative sites and set off a barrage of outraged posts. They might not know exactly why Marc Rich pisses them off so much, but they know very well it does.
