New Montana law gives schools more facilities money, but increases local tax burden
BILLINGS Schools have a new tool for helping keep up with building repairs, but it comes at the cost of local taxpayers.
Legislators passed a law this spring that allows school boards to pass non-voted levies that fund facilities projects and eventually chips in some matching money from the state.
At least three Yellowstone County school districts have passed such a levy, and another district passed an option but didnt enact the levy.
In Lockwood, the roughly $140,000 per year generated by the levy will help fix a crumbling roof. In Elysian, it will go toward maintaining a school that was extensively remodeled and expanded in work completed in 2015. Canyon Creek also passed the levy, which according to school board minutes will be used for roof repairs.
