It's 2017, not 1917, this untenable.

Threats of violence and even rape against men are not uncommon at all.
The thing about the internet you can always find someone that disagrees and often find people that disagree violently.
My problem with these sorts of posts is that it seems to set women up to be victims. The vast majority of the violence directed at anyone on the net is done by folks that would not have the courage to even voice their opinions in person forget about actually carry out their threats.
Making their rambling powerful is giving trolls way too much credit.
You can look at any famous person Twitter or Facebook or whatever male or female and find folks who lash out at them. Try Sean Hanity's Twitter some time. It is filled with folks calling for hi. To be beaten or worse.
The internet can be very ugly for anyone women and men.
The whole be a victim thing bugs me.

Feminists just see sexism everywhere. I don't mean Hillary, but she's just repeating it.

(1,017 posts)If a man gets attacked they just attack back and laugh about it. Women take it too seriously imo.
When someone is targeted and harassed over a period of time by another person or group of people then that's when its wrong. That and just the rough and tumble of the internet need to be separated though, and that's something I don't think feminists do. Then all the complaining does is gets twitter, facebook... to censor and ban people and makes things less free, or worse could possibly lead to the govt getting involved. That's what worries me about the issue and why we need real facts about it and it shouldn't be politicised.

(24,615 posts)Our weak and overly-sensitive little brains swoon at the very idea of rape, and we hit our Laura Ashley-covered fainting couch at the thought that someone might want to give us grievous injury. Curled up in a fetal position, mewling softly while being sweetly feminine, we wait for our he-man to rush in, take us in his strong arms and say: "Now dear, you know not to take these things seriously! Don't worry your pretty little head about this." If only we women had it as bad as you men do, we might eventually figure it out ourselves, but it's good to know that in the meantime, we can count on a random internet male poster to put us in our place.

(13,921 posts)Rape and death threats are not acceptable forms of banter, and excusing them as such is a problem. It is explicitly providing cover and protection for those among them that are serious. And sad fact is that, even if we accept your word that more abuse is aimed at men than at women online, the threats against women are more serious and more likely to be followed through on than those against men.
Lets break it down to actual numbers
If you get 3 rape threats, and each has a 1 in 71 chance of being real, and my sister gets one rape threat with a 1 in 5 chance of being real.. Who can shrug it off as banter, and who should take it seriously?

(5,714 posts)This is a forum for supporters of the pro-women's rights Democratic Party, not for people who trivialize and dismiss violent, often-specific and potentially credible threats against individual women. Ever heard of "doxxing?" Happens to women online on a regular basis - feminist women being the most common targets. What does THAT tell you about how safe the Internet is for women?
If women can't speak out against the very real and utterly pervasive violence, discrimination, and misogyny that occurs both online and offline without some pathetic asshole posting their personal information (including their home address and phone number) online for any stalker or predator to take advantage of, then how the hell are they supposed to participate in online discussions of political and social issues (particularly discussions of issues that directly and disproportionately affect women)? And you have the gall to complain about "censorship" and the Internet being "less free" for so-called "banter" that includes graphic, personal threats of rape and murder? Let me ask you this: have you ever considered how THAT censors and silences women, how that makes them "less free?" That's a rhetorical question, of course.

(4,492 posts)I've definitely seen it both online and off. I also work in a male dominated field and have seen it from direct supervisors (this week, when I did something well, my boss said 'Good Girl." IMO 'good girl' is what you say to a dog, not your employee.)
Part of my job description is running petition drives and overseeing street canvassing operations. In one project I worked on, I had a canvasser catcall women in order to get them to sign (I fired him as soon as I found this out).
I've witnessed many busy streets. Not once does a man have to fear walking near a site with many women and getting catcalled.

(5,591 posts)I'm still with her.
This past travesty of an election has magnified how far women have not actually come after all, but with the bravery and courage of some magnificent leaders we have been re-awakened and energized.
We old crones have seen and experienced much in our lives in the feminine battles, we grow weary as well as cranky sometimes, but seeing the exuberant passion and determination of the younger generation of women in the Resistance, it strengthens us!
Together we are a considerable force. Add in the strong character, respect and support of the males who get it and embrace it, we can make some serious advances.
