Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) struggled on Sunday to explain presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romneys investments outside the United States, including Swiss bank accounts and a corporation in Bermuda.
During an interview with ABCs Terry Moran, Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley (D) ripped into Romney for betting against America with his foreign investments.
President Obama is not running against the Almighty, he is running against the alternative, OMalley explained. And the alternative in this case is Gov. Mitt Romney, who had the 47th worst job-creation rate as governor, and also has a penchant, a talent for offshoring American jobs sending them overseas. And also maintaining offshore bank accounts in Bermuda, Swiss bank accounts.
The Maryland governor added: Ive never known of a Swiss bank account to build an American bridge, a Swiss bank account to create American jobs, or Swiss bank accounts to rebuild the levies to protect the people of New Orleans. Thats not an economic strategy for moving our country forward.

(19,846 posts)for younger DUers, Goldsboro did this imitation of a cricket chirping-- or a frog or something-- he'd do it like a ventriloquist when on talk shows and everyone would look around to see where it was coming from. Hilarious. The first couple times he did it on Mike Douglas, at least. Anyway Jindal's voice and hairstyle reminds me of Goldsboro and I could just imagine him trying it in an interview as an evasive maneuver...
Larry O'Donnell: "Gov Jindal, how do you defend Mitt Romney's record of vulture capitalism while the nation is recovering from a near depression owing to exactly that sort of practice?"
Jindal: {cricket imitation}
O'Donnell: "What the hell was that?"
Jindal: "I don't know but I was about to say {cricket imitation}"
O'Donnell: "What's going on there, Governor?"
Jindal: "I-- "

(50,440 posts)Start 'defining' Mr. Outsource/Offshore too soon and it doesn't resonate, the same if it's done too late. I think the timing is right now and it IS resonating. I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg re the Dems, come September/October the REAL hammering will take place.

(769 posts)and when property values decline your property taxes will go down as long as the county hasn't raised the rates, right?
MD just passed a new tax on households making 150k a year, which in the DC metro area isn't that much money once you factor in home prices, commuting costs, daycare etc

(7,113 posts)I work with several people who specifically moved to Maryland from other states for the job opportunities. Low taxes don't mean much when you're not earning a paycheck in the first place.
The roads here are better than other states I've lived in, the schools are the best in the nation, we have solid environmental protection policies, and four of our counties made the list of the most prosperous counties in the nation:

Governors of other states only dream of doing as well as Maryland.

(101,352 posts)You trust an anti-tax group to tell you the truth, do you? Also in that article:
Whats more, he points out that the wealthy usually move because of a job change, life change or retirement rather than taxes.
There is no evidence that tax structures are a significant determinant in their location choices, Bergsman said.
Whats more, he said, Maryland is still minting high-earners and has among the highest incomes and highest concentration of millionaires in the country.
Also, where did your claim of "he's taxing the poor and middle class for everything but breathing" come from? Your article was a claim that very rich people were moving.

(7,113 posts)Maryland is circling the drain, as evidenced by the advent of in-state gambling.
Both states have gambling, lotteries, and horse-racing to one degree or another, so your chosen metric for gauging economic prosperity really proves nothing, except that you apparently have a major grudge against your neighboring state.

(769 posts)when coupled with the local piggyback rates, puts MD in the top 10 nationally for tax rates.
Now, who is it that's paying the majority of sales taxes in a state? The rich or the poor and middle class?
The state is turing to table games where? Baltimore City and PG County are the big ones.
Now why aren't the putting these casinos in Montgomery County where the money is?
Kingofalldems
(38,469 posts)Why do you continue to lie?
TBMASE
(769 posts)even though the poor are far more likely to play the lottery than wealthy people are. Yeah, you're right, what was I thinking by looking at how shitty the area is around the casinos in Jersey and Charles Town are. The local communities are in ruins while large casinos are being built only a block away.
I'm sure the folks in Baltimore City and PG County will enjoy all the spoils of casino gaming they've seen from the state lottery system

(21,925 posts)It's impossible to put a favorable spin on Romney's offshoring of jobs and lack of faith in America when he invests his money in Switzerland. The best Jindal could do is say that Obama has never run a business. It was a pathetic defense but I don't think it would be possible to defend the indefensible. Maybe he should just start spouting someone's name continuously during interviews like Joe Walsh.

Nor, is a business a democracy, and it cracks me up that these allegedly democracy-loving jerkwads can't let that notion into their thick skulls. (6,928 posts)Louisiana has a governor? Bobby-on-the-Road Jindal spends less time in Baton Rouge than Romney spent in America when subject to the Vietnam draft. His billis in the Louisiana legislature are written by ALEC, the words that come out of his mouth are given to him by the Republican party, and, ironically, he has been sucking off of the government teat since he was a pup and has never had a job outside of government---the same thing he denounces Obama for.
He sucked up to Perry---until that imploded. Now he is sucking up to Romney. But in Louisiana, who cares? The Republican morons in Louisiana voted for Santorum because Gingrich wasn't hardcore enough. So Jindal is preaching to a choir that is even less-informed than he is.
